I have been around firearms for most of my life, but for a variety of reasons, owning one of my own was never feasible. The gun I have the fondest memories of, and learned to shoot on, was my uncle's winchester model 69 repeater, which was relegated to single shot capacity by virtue of a long-lost magazine. My uncle was a former hunting/fishing guide, and that gun was passed to him (sans magazine) by an old veteran who reportedly killed countless elk with it from shots through the eye socket.
About a month ago, I was finally able to make a gun purchase, and I ordered the parts for an AR15 build. However, I also have an interest in learning to hunt small game, and before the lower arrived from PA I found this old winchester on the shelf of a local pawn shop. As soon as I picked it up, it felt so RIGHT and familiar that I just had to buy it. The only difference I can see between this model 67 and the model 69 of my childhood is that it doesn t have a gaping hold where the magazine well should be. I might have paid a little too much, $179, but I wanted it too badly to quibble over ten or twenty bucks.
These old guns have amazing balance, and the finish on this one is in amazing condition for the age. To my (inexperienced) eye, the bore looks absolutely pristine. There is no rust on the barrel, and the only damage on the stock is a few small dings. The only major points I see in terms of wear are a few very small dings on the crown (which sucks) and some extractor wear. Given the wear on the extractor and the near-perfect bluing, I almost suspect refinishing of some sort but have no idea how to determine such a thing for sure. If you guys have any info on how to determine if a gun has been refinished I would like to hear it.
Just picked it up from gun-jail, and will be picking up the lower for my AR15 tomorrow. I am pretty stoked about it, and thanks for taking a look.
