Choosing an optic <$700 and system mil/mil vs moa/moa

Looking to pick up a scope for a Savage 10 FCP in .308

Predominantly for shooting target at 100-200yds and eventually pushing out to 1000yds on rare occasion.

As a novice I have to decide whether to buy/learn either MOA/MOA vs MIL/MIL. From my limited knowledge avoiding MIL/MOA altogether.

From my research MOA/MOA will make easier calculations and more precise adjustments, correct?

MIL/MIL will open up SWFA and follow more standardization?

As of right now, the scopes i'm choosing between.

    SWFA SS 10x42 MIL/MIL

    SWFA SS 3-15x42 MIL/MIL

    Vortex Viper HS-T 4-16x44 VMR-1 MOA/MOA

    Vortex Viper HS-T 6-24x50mm VMR-1 MOA/MOA

What else could I be missing in my budget ($700)? Yes, unfortunatly $700 is the very extreme top of my budget right now.

I do realize that the SWFA is FFP, while the Vortex are SFP.

I don't really find that too important in the decision. Should I?

    Thanks for any help.

For just under $700 ($678.84), I think this will probably be a better optic than anything else in it's price range:

Thanks. Seems a little sketchy that it's much cheaper on that site than anywhere else?

Also, if maxing out at 10x magnification, I would probably just stick to a fixed 10x. The other options (and money) are for more magnification.

I do see good reviews of the Burris, but one that stacks up in features to the others listed puts it well above the budget.

I've ordered from them before without issue. I got my Bushnell 3-12X44 G2DMR from them for about $150 less than anywhere else I could find. Scope showed up in sealed packaging and has run like a boss for several years now atop my SPR.

Concerning the 10X top end magnification, I think the glass in the Burris will be clear enough that you'll be able to see at least the same level of detail at 10X as you would through the Vortex or SWFA scopes at higher magnification. The glass on the XTR II scopes is really, really good for the price. I would at least consider looking through one of them before discounting it based on the lower magnification range.

That's a great price for that scope. Unfortunately, it's mil/moa.

I like all of your choices, You might want to add listed, a used PST to the list (but that's ok and what I did).

I'll trade you a look through my PST 6-24 for a pull of the trigger on your Savage at the Livermore range

You almost had me rethinking my viper hs-t decision, but the Burris isn't available with an moa reticle as far as I can tell

I believe it is mil/mil. At least from the product description (not spec table) on bushnell.com
http://www.bushnell.com/all-products...-50mm-mil-dot# it shows 0.1 mil click value.

Maybe a quick call to bushnell can confirm it.

Yeah I'll maybe do that. In the features it says .1 mil and in the specs it say .25 on that page.

The new versions shown at Shot Show are available with the SCR-MOA reticle and MOA turrets:

I'm currently running the Vortex Viper HS-T 6-24x50 VMR-1(MOA) on my 223 AR
I use it out to 500 meters regularly and have had great results so far. I just leave the magnification set at 18x to shoot from 200-500 meters out at Sac Valley. Yesterday I was shooting at clay pigeons placed out to 600yds and was hitting them with regularity even fighting with the wind. It has shown consistency being run up and down through the elevation adjustments on a regular basis.

Whats up with people getting hung up on the reticle so long as the turrets match????

I must be a very flexible shooter that doesn't worry about the ruler (thats what a reticle is) in the scope...
