Whats a good eotech model

Would like to know currently what is a good eotech model to buy new. I see that there are a bunch of different types out there but not sure what the difference is. Would like to know what is recommended.

There are so many options because there are so many features....

Help us narrow down your choices...

Battery type? (N lithium, 123a, or AA)

Hight (Low,High) You want a normal co-witness or a low one with BUIS? Or are you even running BUIS?

Do you need/want the night vision option? (to be used with NVG's or NVM)

Mounting options. (normal, Arms lever)

You planning on running a Magnifier? (There are models specifically for that)

553,556,557 are all higher.
511,551,512,552 are all lower.

The high ones are about 7mm or so higher. Back up irons show in the low part of the Eotech glass. But not centered on the dot. Some people like it this way. Not my cup of tea.

From other sites, there seems to be some issues with the newer models with night vision, and the range finding reticle. A lot of it seems to be nitpicking, but if you think you are that type, stick with the A65 recticle.

If you are using the Eotech on a AR -M4 type rifle with the standard front sight, I would go with the newer Eotechs which are higher. The front sight blocks the lower Eotechs a bit.

The Eotechs using AAs and CR123s last longer than the N type batteries.

I've got my buddy's 516 on mine now, and i think that one falls under the higher as well. Its good to know which ones are lower.

After trying this out... i think i prefer the lower height. Can these have their mounting bases swapped out for say a Larue throw lever mount and maybe have it sit lower that way???

Not that I have seen...most the Larue options are to add height.

The 516 is the best all around model for most people, even LEO. Only thing it doesn't have is nightvision. I think it is the newest model, not sure. Raised 7mm base, iron sites in lower 1/3. On/Off/Brightness adjustment buttons on side instead of back so you can put a magnifier closer. Easier to adjust too. Knurled round crossbolt easy to tighten, use a coin or empty bullet case(haven't tried it yet). Shorter length and raised front area to fit over stock style M16/AR15 plastic handguards to allower further forward position without touching forearm. CR123 lithium batteries are getting more common and carry the most battery life tied with AA. The battery compartment is is easy to open, just lift the lever firmly.

I like mine, was going to get a 512 but got this one on accident, but it was a good thing.

So a aimpoint would be better than a eotech? I have standard front sites and have no need for a night vision, and I would like to keep my rear flip up site on the rifle.

+1 on the Aimpoints.

If you really like the Eotech reticle, you might want to look at the 516 model--if you don't need NV it will save you some money, while giving you a nice lower 1/3rd co-witness w/o having to purchase a riser--provided that is what you are after.
