Not quite sure where to ask this. Looking for some night vision binoculars or a monocular for fun. Does not need to be mounted on a weapon. Anybody have any experience. Thanks.

Sounds like you just want this for fun or something to mess around with? If so, there are some budget options on the market, but you really need to be reasonable with expectations and understand its limitations.
Check out this thread… lots of pictures (Page 1 and 2) and might give you a better idea of what to expect.

My opinion, save your money and just pass on the idea. I've gone down the budget road more than once and it always leads to disappointment for any real applications I would try to use them for (outdoors without external or more powerful illumination for distance). Anything indoors or close range you might as well use a decent flashlight at a fraction of the cost…
Unless you have a realistic budget for equipment, $400 isn't going to buy you anything worth owning and almost always limit you to a Gen 1 scope. Gen 1 intensifier basically require IR illumination and leave a lot to be desired. Performance and image quality / resolution will be seriously lacking for anything truly useful.
You really need to step up to a Gen II unit and that stuff starts at about $1000-$1500+
I would stay away from majority of the units you see for $200-$350 area….
But if you still want to check one out for yourself… you might want to look at something like this... I haven't used it myself, but its got some decent reviews... Might be worth a look if you can only afford something in the Gen1 price class.
Hope that helps...Last edited by ExtremeX; 01-15-2015, 9:35 PM.ExtremeX -
If you left a zero out and meant $4,000, I can offer some recommendations. You will generally save money, however, if it is not mounted to a rifle. Plus, you can use an illuminator if it isn't rifle mountable in CA. It depends on how far you want to see. Gen1 isn't worth beans after about 50 yards, and the picture is already struggling and distorting at all ranges.Comment

Pretty much anything under $400(actually, anything under probably $1000) is going to be kinda... crap. They work much better with an IR emitter(infrared flashlight), but then you run the risk of ending up with what CA considers to be a "sniper scope" if it can be mounted to a weapon(without the IR emitter they're good to go).
Pretty much useless for anything beyond playing tactical toothfairy leaving money under your kid's pillow.Comment
