sks accessories?

I recently purchased a 1951 Russian SKS and was wondering if there were any for sure items I should purchase to make this gun perform better and make me happier than I am already. Im looking forward to what you guys come up with.

lots of ammo.I tried out my norinco last sat.with the muzzle brake,scope and new mount.was realy surprised how acurate it was out to 350-400 yds.even with wolf ammo.
If you get a scope mount look for a good one had problems getting a cheap one to fit.foun an original norinco and still had to do some filing to get it on but it has side set screws to keep it tite.
muzzle brake helped a little but not much.got it for 12 dollars at the last reno gun show.
plan on getting a better scope soon.as it performed a lot better than anticipated with accuracy.

+1 on the ammo.

Russians are really as good as it gets when it comes to sks rifles. The only things you can really do to make them better without taking away the nostalgia and resale value are

1. Trigger Job - I would not replace any of the parts unless they absolutely need it. You could send it away and get a great trigger job for $35-$45. Can't reccomend anyone in particular but Murrays does them. Or there are some tutorials online that can show you how to do it yourself.
2. Clean the crap out of it. Including refinishing the stock for a better look.
3. Rebarrel it. Depending on what you do it may affect the resale value. I don't care about it since I never plan on selling any of my SKS's. So I had a new barrel put on mine. Not Chrome Lined. Accuracy is incredible now. Hitting soda cans 250-300 yards with iron sights about 75% of the time.

If you want to toy around with an SKS and start changing it up go with a Yugo or Chinese as these are less expensive and less desirable in original form.

Thank you both of the replies. Nice gun r08ert! I was thinking about changing the stock around and throwing a little money at it. I have heard similar to what you said. I got my sks in Oroville for $360. Its in pretty great shape compared to what I have seen for sale right now. Maybe I will just take care of this one and fix up a yugo like you mentioned earlier. Does your Rifle have a Spring loaded FP? (49-51 Russian SKS's had this from factory)

I just prefer to leave my SKS bone stock. I had a Russian and a Chinese and the ChiCom outshot the Russkie. Lots of quality ammo and trigger time. Why put lipstick on a pig?

I'm in the same boat as I just purchased a '51 tula Russian from a fellow board member, I'd love to scope it but after some research all of the mounts I've seen other than the choate loose their zero everytime the gun is field stripped. No way in hell am I going to drill my russian!

1949-51 Russian SKS's had spring loaded FP's from the factory (So does the Bolt serial#s match the dated top cover and other parts that have a serial #? otherwise someone removed the 51 bolt/FP or it was removed during re-arsonal repairs...

mine has had the bolt removed. I checked the numbers on everhting else and they are all original. Sorry about my very late reply. I havent been around a comp for awhile.

Don't bother with the receiver mount that comes with the Leapers scope, available from Shooters Supply. I bought one a couple of years ago and my zero was wandering all over the place because the screws would come undone. Tried Locktight, it didn't work. I finally decided that the receiver is just not the place to put a scope on an SKS. Switched to a Williams aperture sight and it aims fine.

The Leapers scope isn't bad. I just need another rifle to mount it on now.

i wouldn't put any of that junk on a russian. i'm considering buying a yugo to screw around with putting all the silly accessories on. russian's just too pretty.

I put an extended buttpad on my Chinese SKS, as the stock was a bit short for me, and bought a bunch of stripper clips. That's all it's needed.
