Eotech and Aimpoint are gold standards for reflex sights.

In a nut shell, I prefer the Eotech reticle. But aimpoints have far superior battery life and are probably the most rugged electronic optic on the face of the earth. Not to say EoTechs are fragile by any means, Aimpoint just out classes everyone in this regard.

As far as the magnifier is concerned, do you honesty need it? With the amount of weight and room they take up, in a lot of cases you may as well just pick up a more traditional magnified optic, especially if you are going to run magnified more often than not. The field of view on magnifiers is typically lacking compared to traditional optics. Not to mention that given the price of the Eotech magnifier (and the Eotech itself) puts you in the territory of a lot of nice more conventional magnified optics that are fairly versatile themselves such as Acogs, and so many variable power scopes we could spend all day covering them all.

EoTech has gotten better but a Aimpoint Comp M4, I believe with standard batteries , has a life of 80,000 hours. You can leave it on at lower setting for about 8 years!!!!

+1. I wish they could make and eotech with better battery life. I love the eotech reticle. But I'm buying aimpoints from here on out because of battery life alone.

Damn straight! I can't even leave my eotech on if I do I'll be changing batteries every month. Kind of makes me want to trade it for an aimpoint... But the reticle is too good IMO. I gotta have at least one eotech in my line up.

OP, I also do not suggest cheating out and buying something of lesser quality. There are definitely some good, less expensive red dots out there (primary arms, etc.) but with an aimpoint or eotech, you are buying something you can depend your life on. Now I don't know where primary arms stuff is made compared to top brands, but I wouldn't feel good about putting my life in the hands of a primary arms red dot. There are many torture tests out there for their new "advanced" red dot and it actually looks top notch... But I would rather pay extra money and not even worry about it.

As far as a magnifier, a lot less can go wrong with a magnifier, and if something happens to it, you are not SOL because your dot is still going. So I would recommend a less expensive magnifier (vortex probably). That way you aren't spending too much money overall but you still get the whole set up.

        JMHO.

For shear speed and visibility, look no further than EOTech.

I just looked at the Comp4, can you use it with Magpul Pop up sights?

For fast target acquisition my favorite is the Aimpoint T1:

I have used the T1 mounted on an AR15 while hunting raccoons. Very fast target acquisition with both eyes open.

I have the EOTech EXPS3-0 myself. It's got the 65 MOA circle with a single dot which a man sized target will fill at 100 so you can estimate range. It's great for a QRS as I put it further down my rail where my hand rests so I can see everything around it and easily point and shoot.

Those micro dots look very appealing as well and really it's all about your personal preference and what feels most comfortable to you. If I went the Aimpoint route I think I would stick with the full size because I would like to have a larger sight picture but I'm sure I could get used to the micro.

I thought of getting the G33 STS magnifier as well, but as mentioned above you could find a much better overall variable scope for the price of just the magnifier alone. My friend is very satisfied with his Vortex Viper PST 1-4x for $599ish.

Believe half of what you see and nothing you hear.

If you feel the need for magnification, then get a 1-4x or 1-6x so you can have the best of both worlds. The 1x modes are very effective, and the higher magnification helps at longer ranges, but you sacrifice weight.

Having done the RDS with magnifier, I can tell you without mincing words: Dont do it. It's heavy, its got a large footprint, it blocks your peripheral vision, and adding 3x didnt enable me to hit anything that I couldnt already do with the Eotech alone. It only added weight and occluded my peripheral vision. Okay maybe it adds a bit of target identification, but not much.

I say save the weight and save the money and go for a RDS or Eotech alone, or go with a low power variable starting at 1x. At the price range you're talking about, your dang near a Vortex Razor HD 1-6x Gen II, which are very nice.

I've been looking at the Leupold Hamr with the Red dot on top. May be something you want to look at.Or as others have said a 1x4 or even 1x6 would be a better choice than Eotech.
