    Time for an optic!

Plan on getting an Eotech, but don't know which one. I don't know anything about optics, but hopefully you guys can steer me in the right direction.

For that type of optic, if you have access to a store that has different makes and models, look at EOTechs, Aimpoints, and [Trijicon] ACOGs. Pick out what suits you. Also, if you have a local range where people use these, ask folks to see if you can have a look through theirs.

Just try to avoid cheap Chinese knock offs. These are sub-par in quality and may have trouble even holding a zero. It'll save you money for now, but buying the cheap Chinese stuff will cost you more in the long run since you will want to replace it with a real optic later.

If you're dead set on getting an Eotech, I would recommend the XPS (absolute cowitness) or EXPS (lower 1/3 cowitness) models. They address the battery contact problems of the old models by having the battery in a transverse position.

But definitely look through one before buying. If you have astigmatism, the reticle can look like a blurry mess.

        Just bought this one: http://palmettostatearmory.com/index...fle-optic.html

USAF uses the CompM4 model for the rifles, they're extremely durable and have great battery life.

Good sale from PSA on the Eotech 512 or the Aimpoint Pro.

But you'll want to look at both in person to see what you like better, I went with Aimpoint because I've used it before. They're two different optics completely as well, depends really on what you prefer.

@FLAWLS1 give us a call and we'll be happy to go through the different models of EO Techs and Aimpoint red dot scopes.

              Check out the EOTech HHS1:

The magnifier really adds to the capabilities of the EOTech.

I just got one of these (picked up a used one from a CalGunner) and brought it to the range for the first time last week... Love It!

The OPMOD adds the quick-connect riser and makes it waterproof to 3x that of the normal EXPS. I got the 2-2 but the reticle is personal preference.

They fixed that battery issue a long time ago on their "classic" designs. I ran a 512 on a Scar17 for long time, no issues.
I also like being able to use ubiquitous batteries too.

The smaller footprint on the Xps series is very nice though.

A lot of the advice so far is good, if what you want is a red dot (except that bit about an ACOG, that's a totally different sort of optic--magnified, to be exact).

However, I'd say it's a bit premature. What are you planning on using the optic for? How far do you want to shoot? What sort of rifle is the optic going on? What are your criteria for getting an optic? (Weight, price, reticle, durability, glass quality, battery life, etc...)

It *sounds* like you want some sort of reflex/red dot sight. We're all probably guessing that you are going to throw this on a carbine/ar type weapon. Probably don't care about shooting tiny groups, and want to hit targets between 0-300 yards/meters. If that meets your criteria, then the only things to consider really are price, battery life, and durability. If you want to do something different than above, then you are looking at totally different optics (either an add-on magnifier of some sort, or a magnified optic).

If you have money to throw around, go aimpoint or eotech. If money is tight, you could consider a used aimpoint or eotech, or Primary Arms has a new red dot made by holosun that has battery life comparable to an aimpoint, though it probably isn't quite as robust (i.e. don't scuba dive with it or drive over it with a tank; it will stand up pretty well to range use and most classes). If money is really tight, then there's the TRS-25. Anything less than that has a good chance of not holding zero. I've had good luck with a couple of BSA red dots in the sub-$50 range back when I was broke, but I know a lot of folks who didn't have such awesome luck with them. YMMV.

                      For me, the main differentiators:

                      - batteries
                      - night vision
                      - price
                      - button placement: side vs back. matters a bit if you'll get a magnifier because it will cover the back.

I decided on AA batteries and I wasn't interested in a magnifier. Prices varied from 300's to 500's. I considered getting NV optics in the future but it didn't seem like any time soon so I chose the savings and went with the 512 for now.

There are also minor reticle variations so if you have a strong preference for anything other than the standard 65MOA circle around the dot, then you have just one or a couple to choose from.

Battery life is a decision maker for me. Aimpoint
