What's Wrong With My Scope Mount? Help!

I mounted this Vortex 6X24X50 on my old Remington 700 chambered in .222 rem.
I have mounted scopes before and never had this problem.
I placed this target at 25 yards. The first shot hit paper. Ok I have to go way up and to the right. I ran out of vertical adjustment. I have two shots on paper at the highest adjustment.
I have medium height on Weaver mounts.
What do I do to fix this?
    Thank you for your help!

I think at least part of the problem may be that your rings are not fully engaging the mounting rail surface. It looks like you have enough room on the scope tube to re-position your front ring forward by 1 or 2 slots, and your rear ring further back by another 1-2 slots. It's generally better to have your rings further apart on the scope tube anyway to minimize flexing of the scope during recoil.

      Woah!!!!

Is there *ANY* chance your recoil lug sticks up above the action, and the front mount is pushed up because of it?

At 25 yds, the barrel being far lower than the scope... they hit very low when you have a proper 100yd zero... but it's around 1.2 -1.5 inches... not what you're seeing.....

Even at 100 yds, your current zero will hit 100 yds way low.

If you have another scope just to verify the mount, would be ideal.... vortex makes good stuff and stands behind their products. I doubt the problem is the scope. If you can pin it down to the scope, they would fix it.

Leads me to believe the issue is your receiver/barrel/mount having some kind of issue.

Not positive, but it looks like your forward mount might be on backwards. Most of the two piece bases I have seen have the back edge of that forward section pretty much flush with the edge of the ejection port.

Looks like you need to check the bases to make sure they are mounted correctly. They look wrong in the pics. Next try a 20 MOA base to get enough up adjustment.

Yup looks like your bases are not installed correct but we could be wrong.

Based on the second picture, I do not believe it is the recoil lug as it appears flush with the receiver, but you are correct.

At the end of the day, the issue boils down to the fact that your scope's axis is pointed too far up. From the photos, I am not seeing any blatant issues that would cause that must misalignment.

Assuming the scope's internals are okay, there is something that is causing your scope to cant upward. It is most likely the way you have installed the mounts or the rings to the mount. Look for something that would cause the front to sit higher than it should. Perhaps a mount is backwards or not flush. You could have one of the mounts an incorrect height, and so on.

This is one of the reasons I strong favor 1-piece bases as you should least avoid a mismatch from front to rear, which is my guess at what is happening.

First try to make sure the rings fully engage the mount as noted by a poster above. Then, you can bore-sight it to see if you fixed the issue. If that doesn't work, take the scope and mounts down and see if there is anything going on that would cause an upward cant. Again, bore sight the scope to verify that you are in the ballpark, so you don't need to go to the range to find out if you have a problem.

If it doesn't bore-sight, try mounting the scope on a rifle that has a base you know is flat, such an AR with a picatinny rail. If you can't clear a picatinny rail, which you might not, then just mount it with the scope forward hanging over the edge, then you can still bore-sight it to make sure it is the ballpark. If it works on a rail you know is flat, then there is an issue with your two piece mounts, either in parts, or the way you installed them.

                  Mr. JMP

If I move to a one piece base will I still be able to load?
This is an ADL, top load??????

Most one-piece mounts will have a relief cut on the underside of the rail where it spans the ejection port. The relief cut will still allow you to top load unless you have Xerxes fingers:

Plus if the OP really wanted to, he could mill out say, half the rail length-wise along the port and give himself even more room.

You should not have an issue loading, except you may need to insert the cartridge more from the side, and push down if you are loading an internal magazine. I have rails on all my rifles, and despite a detachable magazine, sometimes I must top load and single feed bullets when they are very long and cannot fit my magazine.

I don't know much about this subject. What do you mean by a 20moa base?

20 arcminutes are commonly built in to bases that would angle your scope downward to give it more elevation room to dial up (1/3 of 1 degree of angle). However, based on your photos, it appears there is something out of spec. An additional 20 MOA will only provide about 5 more inches of elevation adjustment upward at 25 yards. So, while the typical 20 MOA would help, it won't solve your problem. It might, however, if the problem is with your existing mounts.

mounts are on wrong. fix that, re-zero and report back.
