    Red dot sighting in

I know this has been beaten to death more that likely but I am new to red dots and couldn't find what I am looking for. How do you properly sight in red dots for an AR or carbine? And where is the proper/best placement of it? Btw, I just finished my first custom AR15 and have the Sightmark Pro Red dot. Gotta stay on a tight budget as mamma stays home with the three little ones. Down the road I will get something better, but this is my start. Thanks for the help!

Place it where it's most natural for you to look through.

Sighting in, take your upper set it on something solid, remove BCG, look through the barrel to sight in on target, adjust dot accordingly.

    Fine tune from there..

It’s just sighting in any other optic...

Pick a steady platform to shoot from, shoot a round, and use the elevation / windage adjustment on the optic to move the POI to the POA.

You might want to bore sight the rifle first (which can be done without buying any crappy tools), and start at a closer distance at say 25 yards if you think you might have problems at a longer distance getting on paper.

Generally I zero at 100 yards with my scopes, but with RDS units I often times pick 50 yards. But really it depends on how to intend to use the rifle.

Placement of an RDS is personal preference. Generally I move to as far forwarded as I can on the upper receiver.

Placement is dependent on the sight and what you prefer. Think about the type of shooting you will do and set it so it is easy to get a good sight picture. I think I set my Cmore at the end of the receiver.

Distance to zero depends on what you want to do with it. Mine is set for 100 yards. I can hold to the center of steel targets out to 180 yards or so. For close quarters, I have to aim high. On the head of an IPSC cardboard target, I have to aim at the top edge to hit the center, when shooting under 40 yards.

There are some charts or discussions out there on zero distances. IIRC, a 50 yard zero will be also zeroed at 200. If that is the case, 100 yards will be off a bit. Think of what distance you will shoot and where you want zero, vs what distances you are willing to compensate with your hold.

Thanks for the fast replys. The AR will be used for home defense and paper shooting. I don't really plan on going further than 100 yds with a red dot although I know I could with a magnifier and such. I will take pics of my setup soon and post them.

I use these targets and have had great results.
I wanted to share some targets I created to assist in zeroing my red dot optics. I was always unsatisfied with using other targets to zero my red dot as I felt as if I was guessing whether or not to dot was correctly centered over the target. I created these to address my concerns and they have worked quite well and definitely speed up the zeroing process. I also have shot tighter groups using these targets. These targets are designed to take advantage of the human eye’s natural tendency to cen...

I also put the RD as far forward on the upper as I can

I frequently come across someone posting on a firearms web forum who is having difficulty sighting in a rifle. Invariably, someone will respond with, “Get a laser bore sighting tool,” a…
