help me decide on a scope for long range shooting

going to be doing some long range shooting and have a budget of . I have a couple I am considering and are both in the general same price range so its sort of apples to apples.

Kahles K624i 6-24x -
* selling point for me is the glass, its parallax adjustment location, european glass, scored well in various tests.
* dislike the reticle options. i could probably live with the mil6 scope reticle or the MSR, but the MSR is almost 500-600 more today which I cannot justify.

Vortex Gen 2 4.5-27x
* new product, good glass, locking feature on the wind/elevation turret, lots of guys running it and doing well with it, i like the open center reticle.
* dislike the color a little bit as a I prefer straight black, no long term tests to reference, but they are a reputable company so its probably fine,

I think you have selected the two scopes I'd be looking at in the middle market. You have pretty much hit on the pro/cons.

As your other post indicated, you are looking to shoot ELR with a .338 Edge. I would choose the Kahles of these two scopes. It's priced very well since it only offers a 4x zoom multiple, which may or may not be a factor. At very long distances, you'll notice a fair improvement in the clarity. Overall, I think it has better construction, and the elevation turret is 14 Mil, with a total elevation travel of 25 Mil, so there's certainly no getting lost in your turns. The parallax is in an unusual location, but it functions quite smoothly and is easy to get accustomed to.

Having said that, it will depend on how far you want to stretch it. With the limited velocity of the cartridge coupled with the very efficient 300gr .338 bullets, 25 Mil of total elevation may require you to hold over on the extreme end. Hence, the additional elevation adjustment from the Vortex is something to consider.

The Vortex has better numerical data specifications (larger zoom range and more elevation travel), but the Kahles is a better scope within it's operating specs, so it is a tough call. In general, I find Vortex to be a bit overrated and Kahles to be a bit underrated.

It's purely preferential between these two, and I could understand the selection of either one over the other.

I'm very happy with my Kahles. Traditionally I've shot mostly SBs on my longer range rifles however their pricing structure and lack of customer support has really rubbed me the wrong way.

I shoot the AMR reticle and really enjoy it. I was waiting till they came out with the AMR because I really like the .2 break down of the reticle. In my SBs I shoot the H2CMR so I really wanted the .2 brakdown. I much prefer it over the H59 because of the thinner substensions as well.

The new Razors optical system is nice, but why it is so dang heavy. I'm not a fan of the internal workings either.

I came across this video comparison when I was considering picking up the Stiener... I must say, the Kahles looks fantastic. I very much like the MSR reticle.



I really like the Vortex Razor Gen II as well, but it puts you into a price point where you can start considering other options.

Tough choice between the Razor... If I am spending this type of cash on an optic, id want to feel like I am getting it done right. Personally if I couldn't have the MSR reticle in the Kahles I feel like I was settling vs getting what I really want.

Right now, my #1 choice is the Kahles K624i with MSR reticle. Second is the Vortex Razor Gen 2, #3 is the NF Beast, but will need another 500-700 more over #1 and #2.

It is tough to beat Vortex's unconditional lifetime transferable warranty. However, that Kahles K624i looks sweet.

I've never had the opportunity to play with a NF but would have to seriously wonder what incremental improvement that $700 is buying beyond the brand name.

I'd suggest trying a BEAST before you buy one. I was planning on getting one for ELR as it was built specifically for ELR and has all the specs you'd desire for ELR. However, I found it rather disappointing, and it did not live up to the hype. The turrets are awkward, and the occular clarity leaves a bit to be desired. I think it would be okay for a middle market scope, but it's nothing to write home about.

5.5 X 22 X 56 Nightforce

This is what I use for long range on all my Rifles....at a 1,000 yards at 22 power it looks like your shooting from 300 yards. Really sweet about $1760.00
