Nightforce NXS 5.5X22X56 NP-R2A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

The only scopes I use in that price range are:
Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP
SWFA SS HD 10x42
Others to consider in that price range:
Bushnell 3-12x44 Elite Tactical
Bushnell 6-24x50 Elite Tactical
SWFA SS 3-15x42
SWFA SS HD 10x42
Weaver 3-15x50 Tactical
Weaver 4-20x50 Tactical
Vortex PST 2.5x10x32 FFP
Vortex PST 4-16x50 FFP
Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP
Steiner 3X-12X-50mm G2 Mil-Dot (On sale / calling eurooptics and paying by check would put this right around 1k)
If you start shopping the used market or catch a killer sale, you can expand your options to things like:
Bushnell 3.5-21x50 Elite Tactical DMR 34mm Rifle Scope
SWFA 5-20x50 FFPExtremeXComment

I run one of these on a Savage 308. It was going to be a temp scope until budget would allow for something better, but it works well enough for plugging steel out to 1000 yards:
Having said that, it wouldn't be my first choice if I had the budget for something better. Bushnell 3-12X44 w/G2DMR or one of the new Burris XTRII scopes would be good picks. The Steiner 3-12X50 mentioned by ExtremeX would be one of the better options, especially with the sale price.U.S. Navy (Retired) 1994-2015Comment

I like the 1X per 100 yards rule of thumb. I tend to shoot using holdovers rather than dialing in though, so the lower power works well for that. Beyond about 14X, you run out of field of view to use holdovers at 1000 yards with a 308.U.S. Navy (Retired) 1994-2015Comment

Primary Arms 4-14x FFP (Mildot and ACSS HUD) will get you there, arguably, for under $300.I think that if you want to effectively shoot long range to 800 -1000 meters, you should also be looking at scopes that cost about a dollar per meter, at a minimum.
Other options are out there at less than $800 that do the job well enough. OP didn't specify a budget, so he may be looking at S&B, Zeiss, or BSA/Nikon, I don't know. Let's give him all the pertinent info, without making too many guesses about what he needs to know.
Edit: That nightforce should be "enough" for long range, at least until you do it enough to decide for yourself. 15x is plenty.Comment

I have a 12"x12" steel plate I typically use as my distance target and have no problems picking that up at 6x @ 900 yards (max range of the place I usually shoot).
I usually shoot at 8x to 12x so I can spot my own shots... what you have is plenty good to get you off the ground. Plus you already have nice stuff, I don't think you would be at any disadvantage unless your targets are really small.
That said, I do like having the top end of magnification available to me, because I do use it.Last edited by ExtremeX; 10-19-2014, 9:06 PM.ExtremeXComment

Is the biggest advantage of the higher power, Spotting your shots or Shooting, in other words removing the spotting scope / spotter from the equation.I have a 12"x12" steel plate I typically use as my distance target and have no problems picking that up at 6x @ 900 yards (max range of the place I usually shoot).
