    Scope for .223 bolt action

    Hello's

I won a savage .223 which doesn't come with any sights, so i need to get a scope for it.

Using a rifle with a scope is new to me (in the past I've used my M1 and factory sights), so I'm not sure if there are other considerations i should take in selecting a scope; type of rifle, the length of the barrel, the length and or size of the scope etc?

Also, I plan on taking the Practical rifle with Front Sight. They suggest a scope that goes up 4x magnification ( i think they all do that) and has an illuminated reticle.

    Any good recommendations?

    Thanks!
    Kina

My budget is decent. $700- 1900. I figure i should invest in a decent scope to swap around when I get a better rifle down the road (AR).

I've heard the Leupold's (a little more expensive) are good as well as Vortex. they both have lifetime warranties.

Also, what accessories would i need; I assume mounts, rail? etc.

I've started researching and have made a list of scopes ...thoughts?

That's a really nice budget to be working with... so many good options can be had within that price range.

It really depends on what type of shooting you really want to do with that rifle and you can absolutely find something very good within that price range.

So which model Savage did you get? Heavy barrel, light weight barrel?

If you want to keep the rifle weight down then you might want to look at full featured scopes in the 2.5-10x magnification range like the Vortex PST which is very compact and reasonably priced.

If you want a higher mag scope typical on a nice target rig, then its pretty hard to beat some of the clearance sales going on right now like the Vortex Razor.

There is also a Steiner 3-12x56 that I've been eyeing which is also on sale. It is however, a very large optic but has a feature set which is generally only found on VERY high end optics like a 56mm objective, 34mm main tube, revolution counter.

          vortex scopes

Wow thanks for the links...that Steiner is huge. The sale on the HD's are very nice too.. hmmm.
I'll be using the rifle primarily at the range and some of the competitions offered at the club for NRA, NRA high power and CMP.

I'm leaning toward the Vortex models...not sure between MOA and MRAD as I don't understand the real differences or value of each one and what the differences are between 5 vs 10 vs 25 mrad's?
(I do like the EBR 2 reticles).

MOA vs MRAD is a personal preference thing... I have multiple optics in both MOA and MRAD and have no problem moving from one angular measurement to another. MOA is a more granular adjustment than MRAD...

1/4 MOA adjustment at 100 yards is 0.25"
1/10th MRAD adjustment at 100 yards is 0.36"

Plenty of threads and guides are already on the internet so I am not going to go into it here. Just do a little searching and look at the stickies in the optics forum.

5 vs 10 MRAD or 15 vs 25 MOA turrets have to do with how much adjustment you can impart within one full revolution of the elevation turret. Again, its a personal preference thing, but many shooters tend to like high speed turrets (more travel per rev)

If you have a scope with a good zero stop, I don't think it really matters. Some people like the wider clicks and feel of less travel per rev. I have both, they just feel different.

If it wasn't for these sales, I would have thrown the SWFA 5-20x into the mix, but if you can find one on sale or used its a very valid contender. Optically is has a lot in common with the Razor, built like a tank, and tracks true.

Considering the Razor is within your budget and on sale, the PST shouldn't even be a consideration unless you just want to save money. The glass (optical performance) and build quality of the Razor is way above the PST line. I also own the Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP in MOA/MOA, its a great scope, but ill take a SWFA HD or a Razor over it any day of the week.

If you have 2k to spend on scopes, and multiple guns you want to scope, you'll be easier and better off with a few less expensive scopes that're dedicated to a rifle than getting one really nice scope and planning on moving it around. All the rezeroing and p.i.t.a. will be a real headache and deterrent to shooting.

I disagree. If your doing it right, rezero is all of 3 shots or less.

Or just remember what the offset was from the rifle with a primary zero and just dial the correction.

As long as your mounting solution is repeatable, you don't even need to a fire a shot unless you want to confirm the zero.

                      Nightforce 5 X 22 X 56

I just today picked up a Remington 700 in .223. I came home and installed a Nightforce 5/22/56. I have three of them and am very familiar with the scope. They are in the $1760 range. But there are lower power Nightforce scopes for less. I'm more than happy with what I have.
