Precision 308 AR....Scope Rings Vs Scope Mount

Hey guys,

I am re-purposing my existing 308 AR into more of a long range "precision" type setup. I just purchased a Vortex Razor HD 5-20x50 and am trying to figure out some good mounting options. The type of stock I will be getting is likely a standard A2 fixed type. I dont think I want to go adjustable for my needs. But the problem is, I think if I went with a good fixed mount like an AD RECON by ADM is that it will end up giving me an improper/un-ideal cheek weld and sit too high on the receiver.

The objective bell on my scope has a 2.33" diameter, so divided by 2 gets you 1.165" from the bottom to the center line of the mount. ADM only has a very low 1.1" option with no cantilever offset to bump the scope forward, or a pretty high 1.47" or so with plenty of cantilever offset, which will sit the scope up higher than it needs to be, giving improper cheek weld.

Is there a reason I should be considering rings instead? They are nearly as expensive, or sometimes MORE expensive than the single piece mount options available in 35mm. And I really like the ideal of the quick release....I had a RECON for an old PST 1-4x and really liked it. I dont remember it sitting too high, but then again, I wasn't doing any precision shooting....more of a run-n-gun setup.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I always prefer using a mount since it allows you to build in the desired cant, and once it is installed, there's no more fussing. That said, the 35mm tube is a tragedy as it severely limits your options. I suspect that's why Vortex changed it.

Ended up getting the AD RECON mount. We'll see how it works out as far as the cheek weld goes...

So how do you like that combination? What Recon did you buy? Were you able to position the scope at the proper distance?

Depending on your setup, and the shape of your face, I imagine a ring height of 1.1" to 1.2" will be low and cause you to not get a clear edge to edge sight picture.

I have two precision ARs, one with a S&B 5-25 and one with a Nightforce F1... both sit in a unimount at about the same height as your RECON and I get good eye position... actually scratch that... the 308 is an OBR so I needed a RISR to get proper eye position... but on a standard flat top upper... 1.47 sounds about right.
