PA 4-14x ACSS HUD Range Report

    Quasi-Range Report:

Rifle: Free float rail, 18" BHW 1/8 Twist Melonite Barrel, Geissele SSA trigger, Bipod, Rear Monopod. Optic as mentioned in thread title, in ADM 20 MOA Recon QD mount.

Load: LC 09 brass, Wolf 556 Primer, PPU 75 grain "Match" bullet (.35 BC), 25.7 grains of BLC-(2), Miderate Lee FCD crimp. OAL 2.25".

Just got back from the range. Indoors, decent lighting (but not daylight), and most importantly, no wind. Typical groups with this load & no wind 1.5" @ 100 yards, best was 1.24". Not bad considering it's a bulk PPU "match" bullet. With an SMK and Varget (and maybe a bit more practice...), I'm thinking I could shrink that down to MOA or better. Now to find some Varget at a reasonable price...

Previous best efforts with this rifle and a TA-31F ACOG were 3 MOA or worse, though they were all made with variable and gusting cross-winds. I attribute most of it, though, to my incredibly poor eyesight and the "low" magnification. In my case, the magnification made a big difference. The reticle was sharp; The glass was clear and sharp at max magnification, even in the indoor lighting. I did find it easier to use the illumination while shooting at a black bullseye in indoor lighting.

The illumination knob is really tight. Needed to switch over to my right hand to adjust illumination, which was awkward as a right-handed shooter. Eventually this will probably loosen up a bit, so I'd rather it be tight now than loose later.

I found the eye relief and the eyebox MUCH more forgiving than the TA-31F. I did have to set my cheek weld back a bit further, due to the mount I am using. An extended mount might not be a bad idea if a 20MOA extended mount exists somewhere. I'm having to mount it on the last rail on the receiver, scope fully forward in the rings, and still needing to adjust my head back a bit more than I'm used to (was NTCH for acog w/ Matech BUIS under it). If you have a monolithic upper receiver/free float rail, this won't be an issue.

Overall VERY happy with the optic. Wish I had known about it (and it had been in existence) 3 years ago. Would have saved me a grand and a lot of (literally) headaches.

Incidentally, I zeroed it 1" high for the "match" load, and found out that my M193 clone reloads (wimpy little things at 2850 fps) are dead on elevation with this zero and 1" left. Three clicks right on the turret, and I am dead on BDC out to 400 yards with my cheap blasting/practice ammo, and still minute of bad guy to 500 if I aim upper torso.

Uploading pic of target from phone as we speak.

Pic of rifle here, posts #510 & 511.

      Pic of target:

Ignore round @ top. That was a low shot sighting in on target above it. The flier in the other group was all me. Reticle was wavering back & forth like crazy at 14x. I'm not used to shooting off a bench, and I couldn't exactly go prone at this range. Didn't bother to caliper that group, since it was only 4 good rounds and that flier was pretty bad.

For the bottom (good) group, I measured outside to outside, then subtracted bullet diameter. [1.464" -.224" = 1.240"] I find this method easiest, rather than trying to eyeball the centers. It looks like a 1.5" group, honestly, until you break out the calipers and subtract the bullet diameter.

Typical groups were about 1.5", but that is mostly my lousy shooting. I need to get out more.

Nice optic. Very happy with it. With more practice I think I can shrink these down. I only had time/ammo to shoot about 5 real groups with that load, after zeroing at 25, then 100, and dealing with targets with oversized bullseyes obscuring hits when viewed from the range's target camera system. I think I'm going to design some new targets for high magnification with smaller bullseyes so they don't obscure hits.
