    Optic Export laws???

Hey all not sure if this is the best location to post this but thought I would give it a try.

I was planning a trip to Sweden and wanted to do some hunting there with the family - they are working on all the permits etc. But I recalled when buying my optics that there are export restrictions on them. SO...

    1) Is it legal for me to bring my optics out of the USA? Assuming there are no legal limitations in Sweden.
    2) This is the more important question as I was thinking of giving one of my extended family in Sweden on of my old optic sights... would this put me in violation of the law? They are visiting now and I could even send them home with one of my old optics but I don't want anyone getting into trouble for something silly.

It depends on the type of optic and whether it's the type that can be legally exported.

Yep, there is an export restrictions for optics. Specifically it would be under ITAR. The problem with it, is that the definition of a rifle scope built to military specifications is so damned vague(it mentions "enhancing usefulness and effectiveness, what does that even mean?), it's impossible to know whether or not it would result in being subject to federal pound you in the *** prison. Yes, there are people that have been convicted for exporting rifle scopes. Supposedly "hunting" scopes aren't an issue, but there's no clarification of what "built to military specifications" means, but there is mention in DOJ articles about crap like mildot reticles. Essentially it seems like they want you to apply for a permit($$$$) and then they'll tell you later.

Ship your optic separate from your rifle. That way they do not impound your rifle.

Thanks for the input, sounds like its not worth messing with; I can get them something else.

          Thanks.
