    1x or 3x? Need Advice.

Is there a general rule of thumb for choosing 1x vs. 3x (distance)?

I have another thread where I outline my situation where astigmatism rules out red dots for my AR and I am shopping for other options.

I am looking at prism sights and wondering if a 1x or a 3x is a better choice. Part of me thinks 3x because my vision isn't great, but I can see how that throws off peripheral vision and could cause confusion and tracking issues at short distances--especially when in motion.

I'm a newer rifle shooter and I think I will generally be shooting 0-100 yards. My lack of experience precludes certainty, but definitely will definitely not be doing 600 yard stuff with this rifle. It's intended for range fun and SHTF.

    Thanks.

The only reason to use a fixed power like an ACOG is for lighter weight and theoretically more durability. The TA44 (1.5x) is surprisingly fast. Some also like the TA33 (3x).

If you want both, you can do piggy back MRD or a variable power scope. TA31 with RMR is a pretty good combo IMO. I personally tend to pick up my head with shooting close, so the high RMR doesn't bother me. The TA31 will serve you well out to 600. Variable power scopes like a 1-4 or 1-6 will give you both options in one optic, but I find switching in between to be a pain. If you're running 3 gun, a single optic like a variable scope puts you in tactical division. Two optics like TA31 + RMR puts you in open class.

If you'll generally be shooting 0-100, just use irons.

Why not look into a 1-4x scope? Primary Arms sells a cheap one that's gotten good reviews if you don't want to spend too much on your first scope.

I think a 1-6x or 1-4X would better fit your needs

I should have mentioned price is a factor. $500 max. Weight is a consideration.

          I hadn't considered variable optics. What's a good 1-4x prism?

Have you seen the 4x ACSS yet?

Do the research on it... Be sure to check out the videos and reviews on them.

I'm very happy with my Vortex 1-4X and the versatility it offers.

It's right about your budget, but you'd need to pony up a little more for a mount.

Vortex also just came out with a cheaper version (Diamondback?) but I haven't seen it so I can't speak to the differences between it and the Viper.
