Bore Sighting - No Laser Required

I frequently come across someone posting on a firearms web forum who is having difficulty sighting in a rifle. Invariably, someone will respond with, “Get a laser bore sighting tool,” a…

    1. Remove the bolt of the firearm.
    2. Set the firearm on a fixed rest (e.g. table with sandbags).
    3. Look down the bore and aim the bore at a target (e.g. target black bullseye).
    4. Adjust the sights to align on the same target.
    5. Ensure the bore and the sights are aligned on the same target simultaneously.
    6. Live fire and fine tune (adjust the sight system).
    7. Done.

works great. we have always used this old method for ar-15's and bolt guns w/scopes

it really does work if you have a sight that you cant seem to get on paper to start dialing it in. usually for scopes and powered optics. red dots too, doesnt work so well for iron sights
Slapping an upper onto a lower is not "building" an AR-15.

What part of "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED" do you illiterate pawns not understand!?

Nicely written guide, unfortunately there are still tons of people on this forum who will insist you need to blow $25 on a laser to sight in a rifle, and that it was some mysterious lost art(possibly voodoo) for anyone to ever sight in a rifle before lasers existed.

Sweet on a bolt gun, not so useful on a simi if you can't see down the barrel.

I've done this with ARs, AKs, etc. But, I agree that there are times when you just have to use the one shot zero method without boresighting first. I have never found a good reason to use a laser type boresighter though.

This is the way I was taught many years ago by my uncle, a high power shooter, who introduced me to the sport in the 70s. Been doing it ever since.
I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.

As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.

I just mount the scope. Then fire a round at 25yards. Adjust scope. Fire another. Readjust if needed. Then move back to 100 yards and shot and adjust .Usually less than 5-10 rounds total.

I've used laser bore sighters on my big bore Marlins. 450 marlin, 444 marlin, and 45-70's are not that cheap and a laser sighter always saves a few rounds there.
Also have used them when mounting handgun scopes on some hunting setups. the BFR.s S&W 460's, etc. Easy to throw a magnet on the muzzle and save some $$ there too.

I learned the traditional way, but now mostly use a green laser bore sighter. stick it on everything from a 22-12 gauge, pistol to rifle to shotgun, works on almost everything and its EXTREMELY quick.

To each their own. Always good to learn the classic ways but never hurts to adopt the new techniques either.

Just curious why you think a laser boresighter would save a few rounds of ammo if one can use the "one shot zero" method to sight in an optic at any distance. Since it only takes one shot to zero without a laser, how does it save any ammo?

*psst* it's because he sells bore sighters and lasers on his website.

Sorry Trevor, just had to point that out.

I've use the collimator style, borrowed from the RSO to site in my Mini14. No way youre gonna see down that bore hehe. Still a lot cheaper and probably quicker than a laser

Any gun you can see down the bore, the 1 shot method is tops!

You don't need to sight down the bore to use the one shot zero method. I once taght my 14 year old (at the time) stepson how to zero optics at 1000 yards starting with an unsighted scope. His second shot was 2" below a clay pigeon and his third shot broke it without fine tuning after the second shot. It was the first time he had ever shot 1000 and hit a clay on his third shot starting off with an un-zeroed scope! I highly doubt he would have done any better by using a laser or even boresighting by eye.

If you cant see down the bore, and your first shot isnt on paper, the 1 shot method goes out the window.
