    M1A Side Mount

    Gents

I recently acquired an M1A and I would like to put a scope on it. But before I do I need to get a side mount. However I'm new to this platform and am not familiar with all the accessories for this gun. Can you gents recommend the ideal side mount?

Also, what madifications are needed to put it on? I asked a couple of people but apparently it varies on the mount. Any info you can provide would be helpful.

    Thanks

Bassett Machine and Sadlak seem to get great reviews, I went for the Bassett low picatinny version myself.

      M1A mount

I have what I think is a "Smith Enterprise" mount. It is marked U.S. Property. It never loosens up and for $250.00 I got my moneys worth. Just remember " cheap is expensive and expensive is cheap" when buying for your weapon

I've had the Smith and the ARMS. Both are solid. As mentioned, don't pay less than $150, or you will eventually be disappointed.

Be sure to read the directions and follow them closely when you install. It's not rocket science, but there is a particular order the manufacturers want the various bolts and set screws tightened.

The good news is that these mounts require no special modifications to the rifle - they are designed to be incorporated into the existing features of the receiver. You may have to remove the stripper clip guide, but that's about it.

            The M1a method for mounting a scope is really weak compare to to most modern rifles. Go with steel mount if possible. Sadlak, ARMS and SEI are good mounts. Other Mod;
            Shimming the gas system.

Also, get a set of USGI bolt gut for spare, the stock SAI parts are unpredictable.

What these folks recommended.I have both a Smith and Sadlak. The aluminum one's flex or something. Then loosen up.
Buy a good scope as well, with a easy warranty.M1s beat the snot out of scopes.Even Mark 4 Leupolds.2 of those for me anyway.
Also:You are going to probably have to get your cheek up higher.Scopes set high on these things.

Ok awesome tips fellas! I will look for a steel scope mount and some serious glass. I already have a cheek weld riser.

                    Thanks!

                      Gents

I recently came across a Leatherwood side mount. What do you know about these? How do they compare with a Sadlak for example?

Sadlak Airborne three point in steel unless you are floating in $$ or get the Ti.

Getting a proper cheek weld is a pain.. it is one tough mount!
