    EOTech Battery Compartment Problems

    Howdy EOTechers (and Calgunnners alike)-

I've had zero issues with my EOTech 512 for well over a year, but lately I've had issues with the battery compartment for the AAs. What's happening lately is that when I replace the batteries, the rubber contact pads pop out and it takes up to an hour of shaking and finessing the little jagoffs into place again to get contact with the batteries. I'll have to keep opening the thing up, reset them, futz with the springs/contacts, and try again. It's amazingly annoying, especially at a range.

Does this just happen after a while? Anyone else experienced this? I've tried searching for this topic but came up with nothing.

    Thanks.

Have you tried hitting it... I mean, calling EOTech? That's what I'd do.

I tried calling...let's just say the 'tech support department' over there seems to be more of a 'tech support person' who has problems returning voicemails in a timely fashion.

Battery contact problems are a known issue with Eotechs. There have been a few threads on this, as well as other issues, over at arfcom on the optics forum. I believe they have a repair kit that they'll send out it you can get through to customer support.

Eotech's rapidly losing their reputation for quality and reliability, as it seems they've had a lot of QC issues since being acquired by L3. Their formerly good customer support seems to be a bit overwhelmed by the issues. If you keep trying, you'll get results, but they're definitely teetering on the edge, reputation wise.

With the huge popularity of the Aimpoint T1/H1, they've lost yet another round to Aimpoint. It's a shame, because they used to be a major contender, but it's hard to defend a combat sight with suspect reliability.

But I shouldn't have to keep trying. I paid $300 for a sight that has battery issues. Jesus, what if I were a deployed serviceman? Stupid L3.

I find myself increasingly recommending and suggesting Aimpoints over EOTechs, too. With the costs dropping on and innovation in Aimpoints it's hard to not.

It's really a shame... the EOTech is an excellent reticle/technology. Seriously, a battery compartment should NOT phase a battle sight. It's upsetting.

I was unaware of the customer service issues - when I called them once about a year ago they were very helpful and available. That's even more disturbing.

... Wait. "Lately"? It sounds like you're replacing batteries every week or something. The cover should come off when the batteries are dead, and that doesn't happen too often.

So it's still covered by their 2-year warranty?

Send an Email to Doreen at L3, they will respond to email way faster than to phone calls.

She's the one I called- took over a week (after two voicemails) to get a return call. I guess the question I'm terrified to ask is:

Am I understanding this correctly, that out of tens of thousands of these sights sold throughout the world to civilians, Doreen is the only representative of 'tech support' for customers?

If so, I'm getting an Aimpoint next time.

What a bummer- the sights are really top notch- it's only once every couple months I have to replace the batteries I get this hassle.

So, just to clarify, is this the rubber pad that goes around the battery contacts on the body of the sight, where the battery compartment seals, or is it in the base of the battery compartment where the other end of the batteries sit?

I was checking mine out the last few days - we're in the middle of a big current draw thread over at arfcom - and the rubber seal on the sight body is very tight on mine, but mine doesn't have any problems with battery drain, leakage, etc, either.

Also, when you replace the batteries every few months, are you using it a lot, or are they going low or dead sitting in the safe?

I'm referring to the small rubber gasket contact pads inside the compartment- they work as spacers for the AAs I think. They pop out now whenever I change the batteries.

Also, I change batteries around every two or three months- I don't do range days every weekend, but when I do, I'm using that sight 5-6 hours at a time at the brightest setting (to battle the daylight).

So it's getting used- but it's also likely getting a slow drain in the compartment while sitting in my gun lockers.
