    Opinion on a scope

Was thinking of getting this scope to put on my fiances AR15, and would like the opinion of the scope section here

If anyone wishes to suggest another scope for us to consider, please leave recommendations here if this isn't a good one. I do have a few criteria though:
    • Cheap. Has to be around $200, preferably under that before tax.
    • Has to be decent/good quality, don't want it falling apart.
    • Reliable
    • Has to have a zoom. Eye adjustment would be nice, but not necessary.

I have that exact same scope on my Ruger American .243 and .270 and I love it! I originally bought Nikon scopes because I have a lot of experience with Nikon camera lenses, and I haven't been disappointed. You can't go wrong at that price!

Ok, we were looking at scopes and stuff on Amazon after I showed her the Nikon, and she threw this up as a suggestion:

What would your opinion(s) of this be compared to the OP scope?

I would go with the Nikon, Barska scopes don't have a good reputation.

Barska is cheap. Go with the Nikkon. Higher quality.

I have that same scope on and its great.
I've avoided Barska based on the quote "friends don't let friends buy Barska"
I've seen it here several times.

The model you are looking at is parallax free at a fixed 100 yards, which is fine.

The Nikon 8497 P-223 has similar specs except that it has exposed turrets and a reticle specific for AR's. Same price.

Consider also the Nikons that are parallax adjustable. Nikon calls it side focus. The Nikon 6740 Prostaff 5, 3.5-14x40, which can be found for $279.

Get a Nikon 3-9x40, The image quality is better than the Nikon 4-12x40. There's no need to go x14 on an AR. But that's just subjective.

JMP is right. .. Both scoped are what you call... you get what you pay for! They both suck especially Nikon... spend some more money and get something that is worth something. .. then you will never have to buy another Optic again. At least a Leupold. I have friends that have 2000 dollar AR'S with 150 dollar scopes. .. what a joke!

Nothing is junk about the nikon pro-staff. I've used on one of my big game rifles for a few years. Barska on the other hand, well treat it as if you will get ebola from it.

                        Stay far far away.

Well, this was a budget-built AR at around 700, so tacking on a scope that is more designed for competition and professional shooting is both out of my price range and quite a bit overkill as well.

Not saying that Leupolds are bad scopes, but surely there are better options out there for people that don't want to spend 700+ on a scope for a rifle intended for range use and if SHTF.

Is the parallax adjustment that much of a game-changer? She would also be shooting sub-100 yards on occasion as well.

Also, if we were down to the two Nikons OP and the P223 recommended by avcrew, which would you go with?

I don't see the need for an expressive scope on your application. A Nikon 3-9x40 will suit you fine. Nikon's are very clear, they're one of the clearest for the money. Just try one for yourself. See if you like it.

I don't think you can go wrong with either of the Nikons you mentioned - I have both. The P-223's BDC 600 reticle is supposed to be calibrated for the trajectory of a .223 55-grain bullet, so it might fit your application better.

If you live near Los Angeles, I would be happy to let you and your fiance take a look through my 4-12x40 Nikon Prostaff and my unmounted P-223 3-9x40 before you buy.
