    Some questions about scopes

    Here we go again...

Looking to buy a new scope for my Tikka T3 .30-06. For many years I have used a Leupold VX-1 3-9x40mm. In fact, I bought a brand new one for this rifle but decided to get something more. Here are the three I have been looking hard at.

    Leupold VX-6 2-12x42mm FireDot duplex reticle ~$1000
    Leupold VX-R 3-9x40mm FireDot 4 reticle $500
    Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x40mm ~$800

Main usage will be hunting Deer and Hogs, all weather. Shots may be as little as 50yds in the thick woods to 400yds in the grassy hills. Because the VX-6 has a better zoom range (2-12) I am really leaning toward this one. But that pricetag... If I get the VX-R (which I really like) I can have some left over to get a new red dot for my AR.

So I am not asking for what is best, I am asking "Why wouldn't you choose one of the three?" Convince me why one or more of these is a bad choice.

It's hard to get scope advice based on hunting on calguns. The difference between 2-3 power isn't the end of the world. If I were you and choosing amongst those 3 I would get the VX-R and also a red dot.

I don't have any illuminated reticule experience to recommend any scopes that use it.

That is what I am thinking too for that exact reason. I am building a new 6.8SPC AR Pistol for brush hogs and would love to top it with a nice EOTECH with the leftover dough.

Like a lot of my decisions I have to determine where my money is spent. That being said I would slightly disagree with settling in on the vxr and the Trij. Both are great however if you are really going out to 400 yds consistantly the large magnifcation can give you greater certainty on shot placement and the larger objective makes a big difference for light gathering.

That being said if most of your shots are 200 yrds or less with good light it makes less difference. Personally, I find it difficult to make ethical shots out over 400yrds these days
