Thinking about the SWFA Super Sniper 10X42

Like the title says, I'm thinkin about SWFA SS 10X42, but I have a few questions. First of all I didn't see on the website whether or not this scope is a fixed 10 power or not. I'm new to this whole thing so in case my terminology isn't correct, if it is a fixed 10 power, I can't back it down from say 10x to 5X right. Secondly if I'm going to mount this on an AR what would the best mounts be? I'm trying to keep this within $425 shipping, and the scope is going to be about $300. If anyone has any other suggestions besides the super sniper please let me know. The only criteria are that it has to be Mil-Dot, with windage and elevation adjustment knobs, and of course $425 (or less) shipped.

    Thanks for any help

yes, the supersnipers are fixed... 10, 16, 20. if you're looking for mil-dot scopes, there are plenty out there that will fill the role and stand up to .223/5.56 (not that powerful of a round). how far will you be shooting?

as for mounts, i'm running a armalite 1 pc mount and that's worked out good for me so far, plus i got it on sale through armalite.

It's a fixed 10 power it is not adjustable. It's not a bad scope for the money. Mil dots are a great thing to learn how to use. Start measuring things for your range book.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

The Bushnell Elite 3200 10X40 Mil Dot is another option you might want to look into.

I will probably never go beyond shooting 200-300 yds, but most of the time it will be 100yds due to the fact that most ranges in Nor Cal don't have facilities for more than that.

Thanks for the suggestion FMJBT that Bushnell looks like it would probably do the job, and I like the price. Does anyone else have an opinion on either of these scopes or perhaps another.

Also, is there anything I need to take into account when buying mounts? My AR has a fold down front sight, but I wasn't sure if I would still need a taller mount.

For the mount, I'm using the LaRue Tactical SPR / M4 Scope Mount QD LT-104 www.laruetactical.comhttp://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=104032 Give Scott at Liberty Optics www.libertyoptics.com a call. He helped me with my selection for the scope and he will make you a great deal! Good luck.

I'll second FMJBT. The Bushnell 3200 10x40 mildot is a much better deal than the supersniper. Its offers most of the same features with more reliability and less $$. I'd also agree on calling Scott at Liberty Optics or Mike at CS Gunworks. They will do you right.

The 3200 10x40 is a good scope for the money (made in Japan). I have one. Best price for that scope is probably on eBay (hiss).

Edit: According to his recent post in another thread, Scott at Liberty Optics will beat the best eBay price, including shipping, that I've seen for that scope. If it were me, there's no question I'd give him the sale.

Well, I've got the SS 10x42 on a Savage - I like it, good scope. So far it's been plenty durable, and from what I can see, it's one of the more durable scopes out there. Still inexpensive, but I haven't found another scope in this price range that can handle hard recoiling rifles (not that the Savage is a hard recoiler, but I've seen SS's mounted on .50's, and holding up).

One other option is finding a used one. They pop up now and then.

Mine is mounted on Warne medium rings, which are another product I like.
                  Yeah.

                  I'm pissed.

WTB: FN FS2000..don't care anymore about this one either.

Sources of sniper scopes www.usoptics.com ,www.nightforce.com & www.schmidtbender.com (a source for SB scope prices is www.newenglandcustomgun.com ).A friend of ours is a twice wounded force recon marine who told me his Remington mod 40 sniper rifle had a Unertl target scope that he was instructed to smash if overrun. While attending the SHOT show this year we spoke to a couple of men who said they were testing the new compensated 338 mag sniper rifle that was topped with a nightforce scope & would hit a target point of aim at 600 meters, they said the ammo was $6.50/round but one could carry a lot more .
