Opinions on Nikon Scopes?

I haven't found much on Nikon. I have a few Leupold and I am happy with them. I got the chance to look at a handful of the Monarch and AR series scopes. In the store they glass was clear and bright, I also like their BDC reticle.

Thoughts?

I am open to suggestions and the scope will be going on AR .308 20" heavy match barrel.

I have used there Prostaff models for years and I'll put them up to any scopes in there price range and way above.

I was looking through $500 Leupold scopes at cabelas and could not see why they were so much more, the quality was not better IMO. Both were very clear and bright.

I have the P-223 3-9x40 and P-300 2-7x32. They are nice scopes for the price range. The BDC reticle is good and it works. The Spot-on app is good.

I like the Vortex BDC Reticle better, though. Something about those hollow dots bugs me.

I was also considering buying one for my AR because of the BDC, probably the 4x. Amazon gives them great reviews, but I'd rather hear from fellow calgunners and see what the general opinion is

I like my buckmaster 4.5-14x40. Very clear. I liked it a little better than my buddies Vortex. BDC works well for .223.

There was a posting a while back where everyone seemed to agree that the higher end Monarch and M-223 series were made in Japan, while the Prostaff and P-223 series were made in the Philippines or China.

Nikon glass is clear

I skip anyone's BDC as it is a ballpark drop compensator.
What bullet weight? What velocity out of the muzzle?

A 55 grain 5.56 from a 14" M4 vs a 24" colt sporter might be a 400 FPS delta with slower burning powder.

So a nice duplex reticle or mil dot is fine.
Not to mention if you decide to swap the scope to a different rifle in a different caliber.

The Buckmaster are very nice, and compare to a Vortex Diamondback. They are still made in the Philippines I believe - they are hunting profile scopes. If you want a tactical profile scope with spring loaded zero reset target turrets and BDC reticle on a strict budget (like $200), Prostaff is great. If you want a better quality made in Japan, more light transmission, better clarity, better glass, better QC, higher spec, award-winning, etc... Monarch or M-223 series. The M-223 3-12x42 is in the $400 price range and worth it if your budget allows.

I would put any of my Nikons up against scopes at 3x the price.

As for the BDC, Nikon now has an app specifically designed for this. You enter the bullet weight, zero distance, and caliber, and it tells you what range each dot coincides with. Its pretty damn acurate too.

My 2nd dot is a perfect zero at 283 yards, but it works for 300 as well.

Buddy has four of them now from my initial recomendation that he check them and Leupold out.

I have Leupold, and have been looking at replacing a couple mediocre scopes, so look at Nikon.

My reason is a bit different though. I like Nikon after using thier high end microscopes and camera's..... They make some really nice stuff.

realize though, that good glass = $$$ no matter the brand. And nothing replaces good glass, whether in microscopy, photography, shooting etc.

Picked up a Monarch3 3-12x42BDC on sale over the holidays and just now installing it. Glass looks real nice. I agree with an earlier poster that Nikons are a tremendous value compared with Loopies. Also +1 for Vortex products.

I have a Leopold 4-12 and went to switch to a Nikon 4-12. Both 40mm. Side by side the Nikon is a tad more clear.
Turns out the outer diameter of the scope is just a little bigger than the Leo and touches the free float tube.
