    New Osprey Scopes?

So i've seen ads for these on the web and now Sportsman's Guide has them too.

    Here's the line up.

They have a decent looking 2.5x10x40 with an illuminated reticle.
Now, I know what's coming. You get what you pay for. How can a scope with all these features be 143 bucks and actually work? I dunno. i'm asking. I want this on my k31 and St Marie mount. Sure i would love to put an 800 dollar Leupold on my 170 dollar rifle but that's not acceptable in my logical mind.

These claim to be only assembled in China using american parts in a plant over there. So quality is supposed to be acceptable

So, anyone see these and or know if they are ok? Or is there another cheaper line of scope that might be better?

    Thanks,

    C

A good rule of thumb is to avoid riflescopes named after birds of prey. Notice the manufacturer has a dealer sign up and sales contact info, but no customer service contacts. Hmmmm.

You mught get lucky, but a safer choice is the Vortex Crossfire series, for the same price range but nice quality backed by a great comoany that has been around awhile.

That was a real world review, based on years of experience in the optics business.

Go for it, it's only $140.

Ahh, I see. Didn't know if you were just joking or had seen one or not. Plus, no offense, but you sell the vortex scopes you mentioned so i was not sure if it was a biased response etc.

Since you do work in the optics biz. Someone mentioned the Bushnell 3200 Elite 10x40 for just a tad more. I think like 170-190 online. What's your opinion of that scope?

I'm not discounting the Vortex scopes but they just seem to have limited models. I sort of have to stay with a 40mm bell housing or smaller to clear the rear sight on the k31 and the only mil-dot scope Vortex has is a 50mm bell.

          Thanks,

          C

The Elite 3200 10x40 mildot would be a much safer choice, also. It's a fixed power but that is the only thing "wrong" with it. A fine scope for the money.

I am biased toward Vortex, as they continue to prove to me they offer a superior value for the money for the customer. Yes, their choices are limited, but will expand next year.

I had a customer use a Diamondback with the BDC reticle in it for his K-31 and he loves it.

Best wishes in your optics quest.

I have 3 bushnell elite scopes and plan on giving them more of my business. Great scopes. For value look at the Dawn to Dusk series. These are great scopes for not a lot of money as well. I have no experience with Osprey.

Be sure to check out Millett too - also quite affordable. I have been very satisfied with mine.

They are assembled in China as well, but Millett is based here in CA and they have legendary customer service. Steve Millett is known to personally post on gun and optics boards and replace scopes with no questions asked. He even replaced a bunch of TRS-1 scopes just because they had updated the design and some people who had nothing wrong with their scopes preferred the new design. The two times I have called them (once about ring fitment and the other time about thread pitch), I was pleasantly surprised that A) I didn't wait on hold B) The CS person knew their stuff and C) they were here in CA and spoke my kind of English.

I've never actually used Millet, but they are located just a couple blocks away from me, here in Huntington Beach. I used to work for a company that was literally 3 doors down from them, and we were all gun owners so we chatted them up fairly regularly.

I can say with certainty that Millet is just a bunch of great people. I would buy their stuff in a heartbeat.

Hey, you always want to get the best scope you can get...That's a given. However, more money is not always more scope...to the point of substantially justifying what some of them cost. There are some good deals out there, and I'm even looking at the Osprey's as well...Given what you're putting it on, and the fact that you're probably not going to be shooting a lot of 1000 yd matches with it anyway...I wouldn't spend several hundred dollars on it. However, as you mentioned, Sportmans Guide is selling them, and I believe that would give you some recourse if you weren't happy with it. Good luck...

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I'm looking at an Osprey scope for a varmint gun. Does anyone have any experiences as of late? I saw a table at the Reno and Cow Palace gun shows. I was thinking, for a hundred or so bucks, why not give it a try?

                      Thanks

Thanks, I checked out the site. What in particular is a better brand of scope?
