    Frustrating scope mounting problem

Hi all, I am about ready to just go to spray and pray with my 17hmr and give up on mounting the scope... I don't know if I am just dumb (which is a strong possibility) or if something is wrong but here is the problem...

Savage 93R17GV with factory Weaver mounts (cross bolt type) and the Mueller scope pictured below. I have now tried three ring heights in the Weaver Quad Lock line... Medium, High, and Extra High... The extra high rings will mount the scope but I have to hover my head way above the stock to see through the scope. The medium rings will not mount the scope as the objective bezel puts pressure on the fore of the receiver. The high rings will mount the scope but the bezel touches the receiver with minimal pressure but still some... Wth do I do to mate these two? Can I even do it?

I had a problem similar years ago. A gun smith solved it by doing away with the weaver rail and putting in some customed made up dill & tap rings.

However these days! There are so manny choices for and makes of rings. Your bound to find the right ones eventually.

Use the extra high since that is the only thing that works. Then, build up the stock to get proper cheek weld. I use a stockpack with spacers under it to raise it up.

I didn't want to remount everything but here are pics with the high rings and the scope both all the way forward and all the way back. I forgot to mention the other problem with the extra high rings is that the reticle adjusted all the way down in those rings still is about an inch above boresight at 15 feet!

i dont think yo have much choice except to use the high rings and use a cheek pad. how is the eye relief? if you use a different base you could move the scope further forward untill the objective lens clears the thick part of the barrel. then you can use the high rings and not have to go to the extra high.

What about the fact that I bottom out the reticle with a good bit left to go before boresighting... Wouldn't that make it unusable?

im not sure why it would do that. the scope height should be ok reticle wise. try zeroing the scope and switching the rings around and see if it changes. i had a maxed out reticle and i did this and corrected it without having to buy anything.

Unless you're planning on shooting at only 5 yds out, don't fret that the reticle doesn't line up with the bore. With the high rings, the scope centerline is probably 2.5" or 3" above bore, so if you set the scope up about 1.5" above boreline at approx 10-15 yds, that will get you on paper when you sight it in at 25yds.
