    Vortex Viper PST

After reading reviews and taking a best guess at what might work on my M1A, I ordered a Vortex viper pst 2.5-10x44. Let me say that I really knew nothing about magnified scopes before starting to research. Im happy with it, at least mounted on the rifle (havent had time to take it out).

So the other night, I figured Id at least adjust the windage... in my living room (optimal right?) with a laser boresighter. Just to get it close. Doing this in the confines of say 30 feet, I noticed when I moved my head, the laser moved in the glass. Im assuming its parallax (probably something I should have researched more) and I then realized this scope has no adjustment for it. Does this lessen over distance? What I am really asking... is this something I need to compensate for when shooting? My little brain is just trying to figure out why the laser pointing from my barrel with the scope secured on it is moving.

Sorry for the scope newb ness. I just want to make sure I shouldnt have ponied up another $200 for the parallax adjustment.

Huh? windage, laser, living room, 30 ft?

If there isn't an adjustment, I think it's set at 100 yards (see manual), but zero your rifle at 100. Move your eye around (without moving the reticle) and see if you have the same issue. I am really surprised that you could see anything at 30 feet, only at 2.5x, I assume. It isn't a good idea to zero at 30 feet, or you'll be point your gun way up in the air since the scope sits higher than the barrel.

Go to the range, and try with 100 yards, and set your zero. You can see if you are inhibited by the parallax by see if your reticle moves. The laser is just to get you in the ballpark. Look at the reticle movement vs. a fixed target, not the laser. You may be moving the laser on your own. I think you'll have much better results at further distances.

Oh no, I was by no means trying to zero at 30, just messing with it. I just never experienced the phenomenon, didn't know if at that range it was normal.

      And yes, at 2.5.

I seriously doubt that the vortex viper pst is setup to be parallax free at 10 yards, so yes you'll have parallax problems. The website says the parallax setting is for 100 yards on the 2.5-10 model.

That being said, even the adjustable parallax versions likely don't focus down to 10 yards either(they probably start at around 50).

I got it out to about 75 yards with the bore sight. Still get the reticle moving independent of the laser. The cheapo Walmart scope on my 22 doesn't do it.

Depends on the model, some start at 50.

So we point out that the website says it's parallax free at 100 yards, then you complain about parallax error at 75 yards still, lol.

I'm not complaining, just trying to understand. And yes, I know the difference between 75 and 100 yards. I figured it would be a progressive improvement, not a sharp turn at ^99.9 yards.

It's not going to be an instant change at exactly 100 yards, but the closer you are to that distance, the less error there will be.

There are 2 ways to deal with this(well, kind of a third).

                  1. Get an adjustable focus scope.

                  2. Don't move your head. Getting a consistent cheek weld and keeping your face positioned the same(so everything is always lined up the same) will make it negligible. Since that's annoying, people usually opt for #1.

                  3. Adjust the focus of the scope yourself. Will likely void your warranty, could possibly screw up the scope. There are people who do this though.

Assumed you were talking about the 2.5-10 since that's what his thread is about

This thread isn't about the 2.5-10x32 FFP, otherwise we likely wouldn't be having this conversation We're talking about what seems to be the 2.5-10x44, they aren't the same scope at all.

I know it. Misunderstanding. Forgot the 44 existed. Looked over and saw that the 32/FFP sitting on my desk was 35yd min and posted.
