What do you guys look for when buying a scope?

I'm looking for scope for my remington 700 308, and it seems there are so many choices. I really don't know where to start. What are some specifications and "a must" you guys look for when buying a good scope?

It really depends on what you're going to do with the rifle.

I personally look for a mil-dot reticle, mil adjustments, glass quality/clarity and objective size. Those are the big ones I make sure to check off first.

The reason I go with those first is because I want the ability to perform range estimation, make easy adjustments (without having to convert from mil to MOA) and field of view.

Agree... depending on the application but my minimum requirements for a target scope:

Reputation for excellent tracking
Matching turret/reticle (MIL/MIL or MOA/MOA) (no BDC reticles for me)
Side parallax adjustment.
Glass quality and durability.
FFP for field use / SFP for dedicated target use.
Everything else is just a value added feature like illumination.

I can get the first 3 for under 1k, but the second I want better than average glass, the price jumps. FFP options will also bump the price up.

You cant... either take the time to find a vendor that has scopes of interest in stock and check them out.

Read reviews / comparisons on scopes from trusted sources... and opinions of Calgunners who actually know what they are talking about.

Bug people at the range who are shooting with a scope that interests you...

Most of the scopes I demoed were all owned by other range patrons, and almost all of them were more than happy to show off their gear.

Best starting point is specifying a price range... that tends to get you some solid answers pretty fast.

Having good glass is good but there is more. The ACSS reticle will give you a huge advantage not having to run data,dial turrets ranging and doping out your gun. Your time on target and first hit ratio will be far superior to a standard mil scope or any other for that matter of fact.All you will ever need is in the reticle laser edged on the glass.The more you ll learn the more you will appreciate the ACSS.
