    Remington 03-A3 Scope Mount

    Hello,

My Grandfather has recently given me his old Remington 03-A3 rifle and I would really like to mount a scope onto it. I do not want to drill or tap anything into it as I want to keep it original and have the option to remove the scope if need be.

I have read online that S&K Insta-mounts accomplish this, but I wanted to ask the more educated individuals on here of their experience with these Mounts. Has anyone ever used them on this rifle, how did you like, pro/cons, are there other options out there as well?

Also, my end goal for this is to try to make it like the original 03-a4's, so if anyone knows the model of scope that came with those, that would be great!

Thank you for your time and I appreciate it.

I used the B square mount years ago. It works, but it had two problems. One, it will lose zero when you remove the scope from the base, so it is not removable as advertised. Second, the mount requires the bolt remain fixed and can not be removed from the receiver. This means you clean from the muzzle.

The S&K appears to require inletting the stock a bit and removing the rear sight.

Suggest you keep the 03 stock, and buy a modern rifle to scope, just my 2 cents.

The only thing that is worse than an idiot, is someone who argues with one.

Yeah I wasn't sure how they all worked, I do have another rifle but thought it was be fun to attach a scope without ruining the rifle. If it's not possible or practical I won't do it.

      Thanks for the input.

Anyone have experience with the s&k mounts?

This might be a little bit of a project, but it would be fun.

I would suggest finding another 1903 that has been slightly sporterized. Just the stock really. You can usually pick them up cheaper. Then you can find a current made 1903 stock to throw it on there to feel and look good. Some oil will do a great job on those new stocks as well.

Now, Leatherwood makes a very similar copy to the WWII 03A4 scope. their M73 would be a perfect match for this setup. A little digging on ebay can strum up the mounts too, Redfield 3/4''ers will work and look correct.. There is actually a guy here in Illinois that will do the mounting and minor work needed. He was posting on GB for a while. I can maybe dig him up. heres the scope:

This would be more money, but it leaves your Grandfathers rifle untouched, gives you a fun project, and a neat shooter.

        just my .02 cents...
