    Marlin 336 Lever Scout

So, for Xmas my dad picked up an XS "Lever Scout" rail for me.

    Super stoked.

I know that there can be some hand fitting required but otherwise they seem to be a pretty solid product.

I'm wondering what scopes currently on the market have worked for folks with scout setups.

I'm specifically looking at a magnified, variable scope. 1-4 or 2-7, etc

I'm also considering illuminated reticles vs. non-illumiated.

Uses would primarily be deer and pig hunting. It might serve as a home defense weapon in a pinch, but my TLR-1 equipped XD-9 tactical is my primary bedside gun.

I used a 2.5-8x Nikon EER on my 1895m. Worked great. Its now called the Nikon Force XR. Great setup:

I'm also looking at that same nikon for my marlin.
        Question:
3-9x40 what's the lowest scope mount height possible?
        Medium or low....
I would think 40mm obj. would need a medium height mount.

I run a Leupold FX-II 2.5x 28mm IER on mine, and couldn't be happier with it.

They are nice scopes for the money, but you have standard eye relief on that one. So, you would need to mount it over the receiver rather than in the forward position.

I actually just went with the Nikon Monarch 3 1-4x on my 450 marlin. Used a set of the Leupold QR rings with it. Nice solid setup. I wanted to test the QR ability to be taken off repeatedly and reinstalled to see the effects.

Nikon has a great products for the price. Whether you go with an EER (extended eye relief) scope or an over teh receiver mounting, you'll be happy.

It's not a scout setup but I run a Marlin 336 in .35 Remington with a leupold 2x7x33 VX2 and really am happy with the balance, feel, and sight picture. With the low variable power it's pretty good for quick point and shoot.

You will probably need something like a pistol scope or other scout scope to use it in that fashion. For the other guy the prostaff won't have enough eye relief I believe.

Leupold made some scout style scopes I thought in their FX line with a fixed power.
