Using both iron sights and optics/scope on M1a Scount

    So,

I have just purchased a brand new M1a before Komiforniastan totally loses it's sh*t. This now completes my set of M1 rifles (everything from the M1 Carbine to this M1a) but I had a thought when doing some research on it.

Looking at the stock setup, it appears that with the proper side mounted rail kit and correct scope rings, you should not only be able to scope the rifle but set it up so you can peep under the scope mounts and still use the iron sights.

Do anyone have any suggestions on a side mount rail kit and scope rings that would allow this, as I would really like to maintain the use of my iron sights if at all possible.

I can tell you that, based on the amount of regret & frustration I've seen on my friend's face, DO NOT buy a cheapo mount. Pay for the quality and cry once.

I have a Sadlak mount on my SA. They have a couple of different types. Both are heavy duty. One of the reasons o bought it was because there is a small valley between both sides of the rail. Once mounted you can use your sights by looking down that valley. The mount is also cut back from the ejection port so extracted rounds come out untouched. They are expensive, but IMO they are one of the best.

I have a 3rd gen Springfield mount on mine and iron sights are still usable. It's interesting how the mount has to be mated to the receiver with a hunk of wood and a hammer.

I have been through this and tried the SA mount and it is garbage. I got lucky at one point and had a Brookfield but it went away with the rifle when I traded it off. I now have 2 M1As and use a Smith Enterprise. I hear goods things about the Sadlack. Just be aware that with the see-through capability your scope will be extremely high and for a proper cheek-weld you will need a cheek-pad of some sort. Then in order to use the irons you will have to remove the cheek-pad.

It's not side-mounted but it affords the use of peep hole while scoped. Great customer service too.

Best setup I have found is an ARMS 18 mount with quick disconnect scope rings; best of both worlds.
