    Budget spotting scope

I did a search and couldn't find an answer to my questions. I'm fully aware that you get what you pay for, but my needs are relatively simple for now, so I don't want to spend big money on a good spotting scope at this time.

I'm looking for a spotting scope in the less than $300 price range, including tripod. I shoot .22lr out to 100 yards and .223 out to 200 yards, mostly from a bench or prone. I would like to see the holes in the target.

Conditions I shoot in range from clear and bright summer afternoons with temps near 100* to hazy, cloudy winter mornings with temps near 40*. Targets are usually bright colors, but I also shoot on dark targets.

I do not need compactness but it should be small enough to fit on a shooting bench with ammo and rifle and a few other miscellaneous items such as drink and notepad.

Spotting scopes that I have seen recommended are the Konus Konuspot, Celestron Ultra and MAK90, and Redfield Rampage. Can anyone give me their experience with these scopes and type of conditions (weather and light) they shoot in and what type of targets they were shooting at? I'm open to other recommendations if you can tell me about your experience with the scope.

My work and family schedule do not allow me the time to get serious about shooting further than 200 yards and that is unlikely to change in the next couple of years, so I have plenty of time to save up for a better scope for when I need 1. Durability is also a concern since I don't plan on upgrading for several years.

A bushnell 20x and shootNsee targets. These are decent for what you described. Might find them cheaper if you shop around on the net.

For 100 yards, I am sure the one Walmart sells will work just fine.

What about 200 yards? How do those Walmart scopes perform on a cloudy day?

I have been very pleased with my Redfield 20-60 scope. I can spot 5.56 out to 300yds on a splater target and 7.62 out to at least 400yds. I have watched 7.62 vapor trails and impacts on steel out to 500yds as my buddy shoots.

The Redfield Rampage 20-60X60 spotter can be found under $200.

I just picked up this and it's got some nice glass:

Just to throw out an idea, please ignore if not interested, most of us have probably seen this done at the range; just buy another better scope for your spotting scope. I've seen two people at the range, both w/ rifles w/ scopes; one spotting for the other, and I've seen a guy shooting a rifle w/ a scope and using a different rifle scope for spotting, just an idea. Or maybe use the older scope for the spotting scope unless its not good enough magnification.
