I just bought a 300 win mag Tikka rifle, and I just want a cheap scope that will last for a little bit that I can take out to just put some rounds down range. the holidays are running me dry so it will be a while before I can drop $800 on a good scope. But I am very eager to shoot my new gun, what would you guys suggest for something like my situation?

A cheap scope for a 300 win mag?

Redfield/bushnell/simmons/weaver would work. Forget the BSA/Leapers/tasco and others like them.
Get the Limbsaver direct replacement recoil pad for it.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

I own a Tikka T3 Lite and trust me you don't want to use a cheap POS scope on it. First they won't hold up to the seriously stout recoil of the Tikka and second having enough eye relief is critical to avoiding "scope-eye" so I'd be looking for 4" or so of eye relief. Assuming that you plan to hunt with it I'd also keep weight down to a minimum. The scopes that I use on my Tikkas are out of production but if I were looking for a hunting scope today the ones that I'd be considering are a Leupold VX-2 in 3-9x40, Leupold VX-3 3.5-10x40, or a Nikon Monarch 3 in 2.5-10x40. All have 4" of eye relief but the Leupolds are lighter.
You can also forget the worthless rings that come with the Tikka. Invest in a DNZ mount.
I'd also invest in a Limbsaver recoil pad.

Tikka + 300 WM, you probably don't really want a really cheap scope since it'll need to handle a fair amount of recoil. Perhaps, you should look into a less expensive fixed power for the time being. I recommend a SWFA 10x or 12x or similar for everyone because it's a decent "orphan scope" <$300 that you can put on a rifle while you are waiting or choosing a permanent scope (or just test driving a rifle). There's nothing more frustrating having a rifle that you can't shoot because you have no scope.Comment

What do you want to do with the scope? You don't need to spend $800 on optics if you are hunting..Originally posted by jmonte35Disagree. Been trying to teach lewdogg21 how to hunt. It's like trying to teach Steve Wonder how to see. Not sure we're ever going to get there.Comment
