Basic Optics 101?

as of now its for target practice, on my 20" ar-15

Chuck Hawks has some great information on the free side of their site. You'll have to pay if you want in depth product reviews but these free articles are a great start.

1st rule: Start saving up now.

Then, I'd probably learn based on what rifles you have or will have and evaluate options from there. Having friends that have good optics is a major advantage since you can try out various products before making large purchases. There's definitely a degree of subjectivity.

target practice for now, self defense as more funding comes my way.
anywhere from 50-600 yards

This is the ACSS system it was originally created for military applications. As you know threats can present them selves at unknown distances and moving. Time on target and accurate fire is critical. There is a huge difference between a target scope that punches paper and this. I created this reticle after years and years of research with USMC input. The reticle is laser edged so there is no mechanical error turning turrets. Built in auto range corollated with BDC and wind allows you to simply range and engage.
Leads are set for 8.6mph its the average speed of target running holding a weapon. This allows to punch paper very accurately and self defense in one.
