    Weaver Tactical 1-5x24

Weaver's Tactical line never ceases to amaze me! There isn't much mention about this scope (that I could find) - so I figured I'd give my thoughts...

After being very impressed with their 3-15x50 with EDMR reticle, I had been eye-balling their 1-5x24... I have a Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24 on a Benelli MR1 and a Bushnell PCL 1-4x24 on Mossberg MVP Patrol (also a Konus M30 1-4x24 on girlfriends AR, but that's not comparable)...

The Weaver 1-5x24 is VERY stout! Super robust! And in all aspects meets and exceeds the other close quarters magnified optics I have. Made in Japan, FFP, illuminated (red & green) CIRT reticle (close-intermediate range tactical)... priced around $600 it's not the bang for buck that the 3-15x50 is (IMO), but it definitely rivals anything in it's price range (and above). I was able to get it for $567 from Overstock.com with a 15% off coupon.

I haven't had a chance to shoot with it yet... planned to go out today, but the DAMN RAIN ruined those plans... so I type about it instead

Specs can be found here: http://www.weaver-mounts.com/optics/tactical/ and here: http://swfa.com/Weaver-1-5x24-Tactic...pe-P49447.aspx some may not like the MOA adjustments (but at 1-5x24 it's not an issue to me) and it does not have side focus (like SWFA describes) - but none of the low mag scopes I have do... however, it has spare battery compartments in the elevation and windage turrets.

So here are some pics (excuse the unedited crappy photog skills):

the turrets have audible and tactile clicks... the knurled caps are easy to grab (the machining is excellent)... there is no zero stop, but setting to zero is very simple - extend the turret and turn to zero, then push down (with caps on there is no concern with them being knocked out of place)...

pulled out to set to zero:

I won't be able to do the reticle justice with my crappy photography... but I really like the design!

      1X

5X (I should have turned the illumination down some)

      5X red

I can't get pics to shown clarity of glass... but it's easily as good (or better) than my Viper PST and Bushnell PCL... I'm not sure why Weaver Tactical gets overlooked - but I really love these scopes. By far one of the best bang for buck (quality) scope line out there.

Congrats on the scope. I have the 3-15x50 EMDR and love it. The reticle was the one thing on this model that prevented me from buying it, though. I wish they would have taken better advantage of the ffp and magnification range and maybe given us a mil reticle with a simple daylight dot or something.
Still, they have managed to offer one hell of a scope for the price. The glass and overall quallty are a step or two above anything in the price range.

I think a good reason they don't get much attention is their lack of marketing, for one thing. But you also must realize that people are so drawn to the more well-known tacticool brand of the day that they simply overlook what otherwise is a great optic from a very well-regarded name that is made in the exact same building to the same standards as their flavor-of-the-moment operator optic.

Edit: I may still buy one eventually for a new upper and try to work up a round to match the reticle.

^^^ the 3-15x50 with EDMR is hard to beat for the price! I love it too!!!

Arguably the best bang for buck scope out there.

Absolutely. The entire Weaver Tactical line is so hard to beat for the money. I almost bought the 2-10x36 for my mk12, but ended-up with its direct competitor (Vortex PST 2.5-10x32) because of the unbeatable warranty. I sometimes wonder if Weaver themselves know what an awesome line of scopes they have on their hands here. Just a couple little tweaks here and there and they could own the mid-level category.

OP, is the reticule illumination daylight visible and usable as a red dot at 1x?

in brightest daylight it's not really visible unless against dark background (and it's a little faint)... in shade and overcast, it's very visible... the reticle is very usable without illumination.

Probably not the best choice to use as a red dot - at 1X it is just small cross hairs... the circle with dot doesn't become visible until higher magnification... I like the Viper PST 1-4x24 as a red dot (semi-circle with dot), but it's brightness isn't exceptional in brightest of daylight either (but indoors, it's a nice red dot-like sight).

I've had this scope for over a year now. It is very solid with clear optics and overall, it isn't bad for the $$$.

But if I had it to do over again, I'd just save up a few more bucks and buy a Leupold Mark6 1-6x. Not that the Weaver is bad, it just lacks in comparison to other optics currently out there.

I agree... you can't compare a $550-$650 scope with one that almost $2K
