    EOTech/AR co-witness question

    Hello everyone,

I bought an EOTech 512 that's been mounted on my PTR, and I plan on using it on an AR build. I love the reticle on the 512 because it clears the irons on the PTR, but I also want it to clear the front sight on the AR because it's not as thin and precise as the 512's dot.

I still want a co-witness (in the sense that I can still look through the glass), but I want the red dot to be above the front sight so I can still have that finer aim, as opposed to the front sight that basically blocks the whole target at 100+ yards. In that case, it makes the EOTech useless to me, unless I use folding BUIS.

I read up a little and found that there's "absoulte co-witness" and "1/3", but would the standard M4 front sight (not A2) be under the 512's reticle?

You will want a riser for 1/3 cowitness with the 512. If you mount it as it sits it will be absolute co-witness.

No matter if you are absolute or lower 1/3, when you look through the irons, the red dot will appear to drop down to inline with the irons.

I believe what you are looking for is to keep a majority of the front sight post out of the field of view, which is where a riser and lower 1/3 comes into play.

This is all assuming yu have a fixed front sight post : )

There are a few 7mm risers available for the 512 to accomplish the lower 1/3rd co-witness you are looking for.

      LaRue is one of them:

Not a bad price, and the "return to zero" is handy.

Might go this method, or just get a full rail upper and a set of folding BUIS.

        Thank you, gentlemen.

Yankee Hill and Rock River Arms both make Eotech risers that run a bit cheaper than Larue's mount.
