    Scope Or Optics? Hunting...

I have a RRA AR-15 that I would like to take for some hunting... I have never had a rifle so not sure what I should get a scope or optics? I want to spend around $300 let me know what you think and if you can reccomend anything to me. Thanks!

I meant the red dot like ACOG vs a scope then... I am new to this whole deal on these things...

How far do you want to shoot and at how big of a target?

Never been rifle hunting only shotgun hunts... Going to hunt Boar and Deer, maybe some small varmints too. I might need a bigger caliber then my AR15 223, I guess my shots will have to be dead on...

223 is great for varmints, but should definitely get something bigger for deer and boar, thats really a separate discussion though.

For hunting you want a scope, variable power, usually around 3-10 variable magnification. Unless you hunt at night a lot skip illumination, and don't get an adjustable objective either. I think a plain old duplex reticule is fine, especially if its your first, best to keep it simple until you know your rifle and your abilities better, but if you want to learn how to use a complex reticle for ranging and BDC each company has their own to choose from.

For $300 I would recommend a Leupold VX-II, this one in particular-

Also Nikon's Buckmaster and the Bushnell 3200 are good choices in that price range, but I think that Leupold has the best glass in the budget range and is the most repeatable and reliable. I've also been hearing a lot of good things about Vortex recently, I have never used or seen one but they have a lot of choices and a wide range of features in your price range so its worth checking them out. Scott @ Liberty Optics can help you, I think he has all of the brands I mentioned.

And last you need to consider a mount, if you have a detachable carry handle then its easy, just need some rings, probably either 1" or 30mm depending on the scope you get and high so they line up with your eye

forget the leupold unless you go with the mark 4 line up.

get this, i'm sure you can get a better deal if you shop around.

We would love to help you with your optics selection, and welcome to the world of big game hunting, I wish you the best.

For $300, Vortex, Nikon, Bushnell Elite are are great choices. I'm not too crazy about the ower end Lupy's.

+1. This is an excellent scope that has a lot of verstility. And Scott at LO is the man when it comes to customer service.
