    Moving Rear Sight forward ???

As things stand my eyes have started to show their age.

As such my near(est) vision has gotten blurry, as happens to many of us. I got corrective lenses recently and that helps with reading but they are not really useable when shooting.

As a result, the rear sight post on my iron sighted rifles has become increasingly blurry. I understand the front sight is the one you allow your eye to focus on, but if the rear is just one big fuzzball it isn't much help.

So, on a whim, I decided to move my rear sight forward to the front of my receiver.
I now can see the rear sight very well, and the sight picture with front to rear sights is great!

I know I gave up quite a bit of sight radius doing this, and will likely catch some flack from a few here. But end of it all, it works.

The RedDot is new, just threw it on to see how it would work with the irons.
It actually is a really great sight picture! I can see the irons and the red dot just obscures the tip of the front sight post.

I think I am going to stick with this config and see how it does, but I have high hopes it will be better for me than the conventional rearmost position for a rear sight.

So, comments? Chastising? Cash money mailed my way?

    Lemmekno what you think!

A longer sight radius is all well and good, but it doesn't help much if you can't see it!

My close up vision has started to get fuzzy the last couple of years (right about the time my age changed to starting with a 5 ) and I'm not really diggin' it!

If it works, I say go for it.

    Mind you, I'm 5'7", 180, with a visible Ab...

Peep style sights work pretty well with old eyes. You can still center the front inside of a "fuzzy" ring.

Hey Slochicken, lol, I'd like to see someone give you flack. Just like Whipkiller said, If this works, it definitely beats the alternative of not being able to sight in at all Good for you.

I'm thinking that with peep sights, the rear sight is supposed to be fuzzy, I know mine are for me even with darn near 20/20 vision, and you want it as close to your eye as possible.

Now with other types of sights, like those found on the AK, 10/22, where the rear sight is like that on pistols, then it shouldn't matter as nearly as much.

But hey, if it works for you and you can still keep consistent groups with a consistent POA/POI then rock on with your bad self.

yes, they are the troy fixed.

              HK front Tritium

Diamond or whatever they call it in the rear with Tritium.

I was hoping it had tritium on both of the rear apertures, but only on the close range one.

Using the tritium sight is probably the first I finally conceded to the fact taht the rear sight was becoming pretty vague. I read better with the page farher away (older guys understand), and this is first where I thought it may be advantageous to put the sight forward.

For me, with the rear sight in a rearmost position, the tritium dots were so vague they were useless. Now up forward a bit, they are much more clear, and the lining up of the sights is much more deliberate and sure.

I lose precision with a shorter sight radius, but I gain the ability to KNOW what I am aimed at, albeit with a less precise tool.

Or so goes my theory in progress ...

if your worried about the sight radius, you should look at dissy uppers. PSA makes a couple nice ones. I just finished building my first AR and its a dissy, i love it. You would regain the 5-6" sight radius you lost.

Glad it works. Don't be surprised if you have to move it more forward as times goes on...haha. My aging eyes really piss me off. I had xlnt vision thru 40. Now at 52 even the front sight is blurry.

This is how express rifle sights are/were typically arranged.
Forward rear sight for fast sight picture and clear, accurate alignment.
                    Works great.
I make hits fast and accurately with my 450 express double rifle at 200yds and beyond.
