    Scope for a 10/22

    Howdy,

I'm considering doing a relatively inexpensive 10/22 target gun. I'm looking at a Keystone 16" non-fluted barrel (I could care less about fluting) and either a Hogue stock, or a wood-finished monte carlo stock. But what about optics?

I was talking to my coworker and he mentioned a 4x scope of some kind will be fine. He's got a 4x8 (don't know about manufacturer) on his and he's very happy with it. I don't need to have the baddest 10/22 at the range, I just want something accurate and reliable. I want something with which I can reliably shoot cans at 100 yards.

    Thanks,
    Rebel

It depends on what you plan to use it for and how good your eyes are. For benchrest you might very well be happy with a Mueller APV (~$130) 4.5-14x40. The APV is very popular with those just starting out in rimfire benchrest shooting. The downside is that the crosshairs are a bit thick. Personally I use Weaver V24 6-24x42 (~$325) and Weaver T24 24x40 scopes on my benchrest rifles.

If you feel that 14x is too much scope for your needs than I'd look 3-9x scopes in this order (best 1st):
    1. Weaver RV9 3-9x32 w/AO
    2. Nikon Prostaff rimfire 3-9x40 w/EFR
    3. Simmons 3-9x32 w/AO

    For plinking look at Weaver's RV7 2.5-7x28 or Nikon's Prostaff 3-9x40 Rimfire (non-EFR).

BTW the fluting on the barrel is all about keeping the weight down.

Thank you for the feedback. I'll look into that Nikon EFR scope.

I will probably be alternating between using bags on a bench and standing/sitting/prone with no rest. I don't plan on getting super serious about precision target shooting. I also will likely take it out to use it on small game.

+1 for the Nikon EFR. Nikon also has a 4x, 3-9x, and a 2-7x p22 in their "rimfire" series scopes. The AO is a nice feature tho. You wont be disappointed with the EFR.

+1 Nikon. My stock 10/22 wears a fixed 4x. No probs and dead squeaks out to 100 yds easy.

I'm running a Simmons 3x9 w/o AO. 40 dollar Walmart scope and have been very happy with it so far. I'm building a bench rest and will look into a more expensive scope down the road after I get a match barrel. But very happy with the value of scope. Tack driver at 25/50 yards with bulk ammo. Haven't shot it further than that hard to see a 22 hole at 100 yards. Need to get a nice spotting scope.

As I've said before I like 2-7X on a Ruger 10/22. And I like Leupold VX-1 or VX-2. I like compact scopes for small rifles.

not to sidetrack teh thread, but could someone explain what designates a scope to be a "rimfire" scope?

i have the bushnell banner 4x12x40. at $85 a piece, i put one on all 5 of my .22 rifles. i couldnt be happier. my kids love it too. they like seeing the big target through the eyepiece. i also run the bushnell elite 6500 4.5x30x50 for my .270. i find bushnell to be a good scope with a very reasonable price.
