Can you recommend a good optic set up for an SKS?

I have a Yugo M59. I was looking to put a scope on it. Any ideas?

The best advise I can give you is DON'T do it. They are not designed for optics and, optics are not needed on them. Just learn to use the irons and you'll be good out to 400-500 yards at the minimum.

I would put in Russian PSO or POSP.

Williams makes a peep sight/firesight pretty cheap. That's what I've been planning. Lot better than factory if your eyes are old like mine.

I've had an optic on my SKS, using a mount that replaced the dust cover. I use irons now.

I've got one on one of my SKSes and it isn't bad at all.

Do you find it has finer sighting? Even when my eyes were young the SKS sights seemed to cover about 3-4" at 100 yards. My Russian shoots as accurate as the sights. May shoot better with finer sights.

I also have a Yugo M59 and I have a Miller designated Marksman optic on it.
                  1 X 4 Power illuminated reticle.
Mounted on the dust cover with a Picatini rail.
It works well dont let them tell you ( whoever they are ) that they are inaccurate.
You wont win any long range competitions with it, but for medium range it is awesome.

To be honest, I haven't shot it a lot. I have too many other guns that need range time. It's more of a ranch gun now.

Resist the urge to scope the SKS. Practice using the irons at 100-300 yards and you'll have a very capable rifle at your side.

another option is Hi-Lux CMR 1-4x24 AK762 scope with 7.62x39 BDC. I just bought one for my Saiga 7.62 and liked it (not SKS but close enough). My eyes are no good anymore even at 100 yards. I found one on Optics Plannet website on a nice discount. Mounting a scope on SKS is probably a bit of a challenge.

I guess a question about optics at 300 yards is more a question of your vision. If you do not wear glasses to shoot then sure theres is no need for optics. If your vision is not sharp enough then it helps. At the time of creation of sks there was no infantry soldies wearing glasses.

I guess when you are a Russian farm boy who was handed a rifle your vision is probably pretty darn good. You know, no books to read and tv to watch.

NcStar just came out with a micro dot dust cover mount. I need to take off some metal to fit my Paratrooper but I think that mount is as low as it gets. Any scope you mount on the SKS is going to be way too high.

IMHO, my Russian SKS is capable of more than the sights provide. My eyes are 52 not 18. Even when they were still good at 35'ish when I bought the rifle, the sights were the weak link. Peepsights work pretty good with aging eyes and if done right should provide finer sighting than factory.
