    Remington 700 scope mounting issue

Hey all. I'm having an issue mounting my scope on my 700. Here's what I have...

    Remington 700 SPS 30-06
    Leupold VX2 4-12x40mm

I tried the dual dovetail mounts with the ultra short rings and I found that the rings are obviously too short. The other issue I was noticing is that the tube is about 3mm too short to fit in the rings. Am I making a rookie error here? I'd love mount suggestions with links/pics if possible!

You might be able to turn one base around. If that fails, then an extension base should be available.

You mean loopy dove tail mounts? 2 piece?

Most people use a 1 piece picatinny base and picatinny rings. It allows you to place the rings on the base in a number of locations to suit the scope and proper eye relief.

The cheapest decent quality ones are EGW. They go up a lot... After EGW, TPS, ken farrel, vortex, badger ordinance, etc.

If you do switch to a 1 piece, you will want low rings.

Unfortunately I already tried the first. Tell me more about the extension base though.

Alright. I suppose that would, hypothetically, allow me more versatility for switching optics with different rifles. How reliable are they compared to the dual dove tail mounts (Leupold)?

I used the word extension, it should have been "reversible".

Here ya go, reversible front ~ Leupold

Ok that looks like exactly what I have. I might need to look more into the picatinny route it seems.

If you still have the packaging, check the part numbers, don't rely on pics.

I had 2 piece loopy dovetail for a long time. As cheesy as they looked, they worked fine. My scope never lost a zero. Even with that silly 'windage adjustment' on the rear.

However, most people that play midrange/longrange comps use picatinny base/rings standard.

Even loopy makes some. Look at the mark 4 series bases/rings. They aint cheap though....

There are a lot of brands out there at different quality and price points. I already started a list in my first post, but I left out Seekins. Glen seekins makes really good stuff, but it aint cheap either. That list is basically low to high in price though I did leave out some brands that are junk, and left out really good brands that are really expensive. Seekins makes the vortex rings but I believe vortex sells them cheaper than Glen.

All the brands I listed are pretty good. EGW being the cheapest and lowest quality I would suggest. Anything cheaper than that is a waste of money. It's junk. Generally, a lot of experienced people think TPS is the lowest price at good quality they would recommend.. I use TPS- they're good stuff but a lot more than egw.

EGW and TPS both make really decent stuff, although I typically run with TPS as they offer their products in steel versions as well as aluminum. Precision Reflex Inc. also makes some excellent bases and rings for Remington actions.

Leupold also makes extension rings. This set is for their STD mounting system, but you only need the front ring, which will fit your DD mounts. Maybe they offer them for DD mounting systems too.

Leupold steel Standard (STD) rings and bases are the most versatile of any mounting system we offer. This specific ring model fits an

No government deprives its citizens of rights without asserting that its actions are "reasonable" and "necessary" for high-sounding reasons such as "public safety."

Just an update for those who were following this or who search it in the future...

What I ended up doing was using the standard leupold rings and their Dual Dovetail REVERSIBLE mounts. There are two different ones for the same price.

After getting my first scope mounting debacle over with my new R700 is zeroed and is waaay fun to shoot

You should look at dnz mounts... really nice affordable 1 piece base.
