Advice needed on a scope

I just bought a Savage .338 Lapua rifle. I need long range optics for it and I don't even know where to begin. Any long range shooters out there have any ideas?

It really depends on what you're going to be using it for.

For a "Broad Brush" overview of quality optics, I'd start with U.S. Optics at the top of my list, with Nightforce and Leupold Mark IV not too far behind.

But there are a lot of quality optics out there and it really depends on your application.

Check out the SWFA line, I have two and are happy with them. Half of my precision rifle classmates this year and last year had them too.

I would start doing a ton of research. You bought a extreme long range rifle with out knowing any long range scope manufacturers. That to me tells me you dont really have an idea yet on how to even get your rifle out to 1k let alone past that. I would personally ditch that and get a nice 308 set up but thats just me. There are a lot of factors that going into shooting long range. Finding a scope that you like and understand how it works is just a small percentage. So to reiterate Research Research Research.

You might take a different tac- find a local high power group and attend 1-2 of their matches

Rings, bases, levels are all critical on long range shooting.

Attending matches will give you a chance to chat with different people, ask about their current set up, what they had before, what next and why.

A good scope, rings and base for 1k + ranges is $2,000 +

You can't go to a dealership and take a test drive but a high power club is a good starting point as well as snipershide.com forum

Second nod for Bushnell. XRS is pretty much their top tier scope, and compares favorably in glass clarity and features to a lot of the high end optics available. Next step down from that would be the 3.5-21X50 DMR which can be found for around $1200. Excellent scopes for long range, especially when equipped with the GAP designed G2DMR or Horus H59 reticle.

Do some more! I would recommend NightForce, US Optics, Premier, Vortex, Bushnell, S&B, Khales, and Steiner. Those are the scopes you want to look at.

Good question, although his rifle is chambered in $5.00 Lapua Magnum so I kind of assumed budget was not a consideration
