Mueller APV is the lowest price I would consider for a 22lr. They run about $130 and are very popular in the 22lr target community.

Above that, I would look at nikon buckmaster 4.5-14x Perhaps used you should hit your budget, I think new is closer to 300.

The APV is supposed to focus much closer than most other scopes, and are of decent quality. I dont own one, but have read a LOT of people buying them and liking them on rimfire central. I *think* they focus down to 10? yards?

On the other end of the spectrum... I have seen nightforce and USO scopes on 22's.... Some people just make too much money!!!!

For a 22 it's quite hard to beat a Weaver for that that money.

Thanks for the input, guys. To be a little more descriptive: I'm leaning 4-12x but could be talked into 3-9x. Unfortunately in California, the only hunting I'll be doing will be for those dreaded paper targets. Just want to be able to outshoot the guy to left and right of me at the range.

I have a Banner 6x-18x 50mm mounted with mid-height mounts on mine. Since I don't shoot closer than 50 yards, it works extremely well for me ... with ONE caveat ... the 50 mm objective lens interferes with the rear ramp site base, making for a long lean to the focal point. It's "almost okay" for bench shooting, but a train wreck for snap shooting. I'm in the process of installing an aftermarket cheek rest tonight to raise my eye while still having a firm cheek weld. That won't address the focal distance so right now I'm looking for guidance on removing the ramp. I've removed both screws and it still won't budge. I want to know if I can safely heat it to maybe melt a glue bond.

Nikon has a prostaff specifically for the .22 in 3-9x40

If you plan to punch paper then save a bit longer for a Weaver V16 4-16x42. On the other hand if you plan to hunt then a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 rimfire with AO. The Weaver is head and shoulders a better scope but the nikon doesn't suck.

Also check out the Clearidge Optics Ultra RM series; $245 + S/H, 3-9x32, adjustable objective. I put one on a Savage Mark II and I'm satisfied. IIRC, I first learned of them on rimfirecentral.
