    Reflex/Red Dot Scopes

Thought I would try out one of those red dot scopes. The two that seem to be the most common are the Eotech 512 and the Aimpoint M68 CCO. Any thoughts on what to look for in a reflex scope?

Look through both tube style and open style to decide which type you prefer.

I started out with tube styles which I was always happy with until I tried an open hood style which I decided I like better. Though I still own 2 tube style dots.

After you know what style you like, decide what your purpose is/what cartridge/distance you plan on shooting. The larger the dot, the faster/easier it is to hit a close target. The smaller the dot, the more accurate it is at longer distances. There are some dots that are adjustable dot size. Most are not- Most are adjustable brightness only.

Also, get familiar with the brands and known quality/repuation of the manufacturer along with the warrany- and what type/cartridge firearm it's going on.

There are very few which standup to the abuse of being slide mounted on a handgun for instance... If it can withstand being directly mounted to the slide, it can handle the recoil of any big boomer. I think those ones make eotech look fragile...

Yeah... but is it a shorter barrel, close range AR? Or a more long distance setup?

ACOG has different aiming points for different distances.

Otherwise, smaller dot, more accurate at longer range. However, a 5.56 has a heck of a drop from 50yd to 200+.

This is why I'm setting up 2 different AR's for different purposes.

1 is a close range- 16" barrel-short and light. Vortex Razor red dot with back up irons. Use is for 0-200 max with hold overs.

2 is going to be medium/long range only. 20"+ barrel long and heavy. Scope only. No back up, nothing. Set zero at 100yd and confirm dope out to 600.

Yup, different ARs for different missions. Have an ACOG for 200 yard stuff, thought I would play around with a reflex for 100 yard stuff.

Then the world is your oyster.

Decide what style you like- tube or open hood...

            Pick your budget.

            Pick your dot size.

I won the vortex razor from a match. I'm THRILLED with it! Very high quality. It's priced to compete with the trijicon RMR series.

The big difference is, vortex has a near unlimited lifetime transferable warranty. They will fix or replace it even 'accidental' damage.

There's a youtube vid of a guy that mounted one on a semi shotgun... dropped it upside down to land directly on the vortex- did it 3 or 4 times... No visible damage, and shot it to confirm it still held zero....

I watched it with my jaw on my keyboard!!!!

And unlimited lifetime warranty... eotech is only -I forgot- 2 years?
