how does it compare to a millet dms-1?

I haven't seen one yet, but just comparing specs, there are a few key differences.

DMS-1 is true 1x, which is important to people who have trouble with both eyes open on non 1x scopes, but the Vortex goes up to 5x to compensate. A lot of people aren't bothered by 1.75x and both eyes - I can use the 2x on my S&W 27 that way, but it's not as fast.

DMS-1 reticle is pretty simple and fast - much like the Eotech reticle. You can use it some for BDC by knowing the MOA of the reticle bits, but it's not as flexible or intuitive as the BDC reticle of the Vortex looks.

The DMS-1 illumination is good in medium and lower light, but in bright light, you've got the basic black reticle. The Vortex is un-illuminated.

The Millet's a fair bit heavier, at 16 oz vs 12 for the Vortex, and the Vortex is a few inches shorter as well, probably due to no illumination.

I've been using my DMS-1 as a plinking scope on a G22, and it's been great for that. I still need to take it out to the 100 yard range on an AR, but I expect it'll be a fast, fun shooter.


Has anybody out there used the Vortex Diamondback series in general? It looks like a great scope for the money if the glass is as good as it sounds and it holds up.

I have no experience with their scopes, but I probably will after receiving my Vortex Viper 10x42 binos from Liberty Optics. I did some research on the birding forums and found out that for middle of the road (~$500) binos, the Vortex Vipers come highly recommended. They arrived yesterday and I must say, for everything I wanted them for, they're everything I need- very bright and very clear. I can't wait to get back into the Nevada backcountry.

BTW, if you need anything in the way of Optics, check with Scott at Liberty Optics. He hooked me up and I'm sure he'll do the same for every Calgunner. I least I feel hooked up and that's all that matters to me.

I have to agree. I recently purchased the Viper 8x42, and I love them. I took them on a mini-expedition through the backwoods of Alabama in varying weather conditions from heat to rain (not to mention the wood ticks!), and they never failed to satisfy. They are very solid, but not heavy. They have superb optics, especially for the price. The 10x42 model recently won the "Best of the Best" award from Field & Stream Magazine.
