    Which scope?

I just acquired an 18 HBAR upper for one of my lowers, it's an A4 with no sights so I'm going the optic route. That and the eyes don't do irons as well as they used to.

Looking in the parts bin I've got to potential candidates.

    A Primary Arms 6X ACSS:
Primary Arms features our own line of AR 15 and AK 47 parts, accessories, scopes, optics and red dot sights.

Or a Nikon Monarch 3-12x42 Side focus w/BDC and target turrets:

So, for shooting out to say 50-100 minimum and 400-500 maximum distance which would be the better choice?
Mostly range targets but on rare occasion large varmints that like to eat chickens on my in-law's ranch.

I would go with the Nikon BDC all the way. We competed in a shooting competition a few months ago that featured many of their scopes and the BDC reticle. Here are a few write-ups on it:

The BDC reticle works like a charm!

Between the two, I'd go with the Nikon.

I'd take the Nikon if I plan on going beyond 400. Better target ID and finer point of aim.

We have a 1-6x ACSS in the works.
You can sign up to be notified at www.primaryarms.com
There are huge advantages to the PA optics. PA has the best bang for the buck optics arguably the best customer service and the star of the show the ACSS reticle. Ranging, leads,BDC that is truly dead on, and wind holds. With out ranging the BDC is useless unless you have a range finder that actually works, data for wind and leads that you would have to look at then dial turrets.
The ACSS has all that in its sight picture.

              Here is our demo
Shooting at the range. With a 70 year old, a 34 year old and a 9 year old.
They shoot at 400 yards then I shoot at 700 yards! Using standard M193 55gr 16" 1:7 Daniel Defense upper.

I notice an "OFF" setting between each setting on the illumination knob. Nice Will the production version have that as well?

The number one reason shots are missed is wrong ranging then wind

The ACSS is not just another reticle it deals with the reality of a shot.

In CQB mode the large horseshoe allows you to be on target fast and if the target is moving have the proper lead.

In medium range ranging your target is as easy as placing it in the right bracket in live situations there is no time to mil and use a calculator to determine range and then turn knobs with ACSS all the math and knob turning has been done.
The process is simple range, hold for wind and engage. In testing it has proven far more effective then other $2000 dollar optics. Shooting at a stationary target is one thing and live situations is a whole other. The reality is multiple targets at unknown distances with limited exposure and moving!

After some research and reading I'm going to put the Nikon Monarch on the HBAR build, since the intent is to reach out to 400+ it seems like the best fit.

I'm going to put my PA 6X and my Mueller 1-4x24 Sure Shot up for sale in the Marketplace and buy the new PA 1-6 when it comes out for an 80% build I'm planning.

I like the ACSS and the PA 6X but the 1-6 will take the place of BOTH the 1-4 Mueller and the PA 6X in one very cool looking scope so what the heck, why not get the package that does it all for a medium CQB build!
