So I recently purchased a leupold vx-2 with the STD 2 piece dovetail bases and STD extension rings. I mounted the bases and was wondering about lapping. I want to mount the scope properly and was curious how many people actually lap their rings. I would hope the leupold rings would be quality and not absolutely need to be lapped to get a good hold on the scope. So what do you guys think?

To lap or not to lap
The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson (quoting 18th century criminologist Cesare Beccaria)"Tags: None -
Lap
It gives the best fit between the scope and the rings.
For all we spend on optics, toys and ammo, a lapping kit will last foreverRule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

I think Leupold describes their rings as not needing to be lapped. However, I went ahead and lapped mine on a Savage 116. The bases were standard. Here is a blog I wrote on the experience:

You do not HAVE to lap the rings. It is better if you do. I have 1'' and 30mm kits if you want to come by and lap them.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Nice write up chase. After seeing your first bit of lapping on the rings, what percentage of hold do you think the rings had before lapping?I think Leupold describes their rings as not needing to be lapped. I guess I should say when you did you first check after a bit of lapping did it look as it was removing material evenly or was there some noticeable unevenness? The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. I would say by the time I was done it was fairly even. You need to evenly distribute the lapping compound on the rings to start, and set the ring screws to the same torque spec. The first torque spec I had on the rings was something like 5 in/lbs. Any more than that and I was unable to slide the bar. I progressively increased the torque equally to the point in which I could just get the bar sliding.
