    Predator hunting optic

Looking for a predator hunting optic. I'm leaning towards a Vortex 4-16x50 FFP, but unsure if this is the right choice. Will be hunting with a Mossberg MVP bolt action 5.56 in wide open desert terrain.

    Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Quality rifle scopes including LPVO 1-6x, 1-8x variable power, and long-range optics. Primary Arms ACSS reticles, Vortex, Leupold, and more brands.

This works great! I love staying at 4x for closer in and zooming out at 14x. FFP with mil/mil is sweet!

I couldn't help but notice you are in the Palm Springs area. Before buying the Vortex go check out the Vixen 4-16X44 with side focus. Vixen optics are some of the clearest and brightest scopes on the market.
You need to physically see one to get the quality. I believe locally you can find them at Guns of Distinction or many dealers in So CA.

Not sure what that would be? Both scopes recommended are FFP and ideal for hunting.
What are you hunting at what range and with what caliber?

Not 100% set on FFP. Keeping my options open. Want to keep the weight down, if possible, so a 4-16 FFP may not be ideal. I doubt that I need that much magnification.

Bobcat hunting @ 100 to maybe 200 yards with a 5.56 bolt action. Depends on how comfortable I am with the shot that is presented to me with the tools I have at my disposal.

I don't think the Vixen is FFP

you might (probably will) be disappointed in the Vortex (4-16) glass... I am returning one today.

I'm generally a Vortex fan - but was very disappointed in this scope... the magnification is decent range and the illuminated reticle is good... but I couldn't get over the far less than stellar glass.

I'm strongly leaning towards Weaver 3-15x50 (illuminated EMDR)... and possibly SWFA SS 3-15x44 (but not so much)...

The features on the Vortex are nice - but the glass kills it... for the price, you can get better.

Thanks LBDamned. I'm going to look into the glass you recommended. Also looking at Leupold Vx-r and Bushnell Elite hdmr.

Leupold VX-2 4-12x40 AO would work well on your 223. I'm not a fan of mil dots or illuminated reticles for hunting. Standard duplex works well for medium to large game and I use a fine duplex on squirrels. On 223 set up for hunting a set of Leupold dual dovetail rings keep the scope close to the axis of the bore and cost much less than more complicated base and ring sets.
I've purchased 3 demo scopes from Sample List and have been pleased with the scopes and their service.
