New to 'long range' shooting. Lost on scopes.

I pick up a Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .223 on June 25th.

Max range will be 200 yards. (mostly 100/200, possibly 300)

I'm lost on what type of scope I should be looking for.

I currently have a typical Duplex Reticle on my .22 that I use mostly for 50 yard target shooting. It's zero'd for that, point and shoot, good to go.

I was looking at 10x fixed power scopes (bushnell elite for example) it keeps it simple, it's not overly zoomed, I can focus on learning moa/mil techniques? (I have not ever used a mildot or any other scope that you can calculate with)

My budget at this time is around 300 bucks. I know you get what you pay for, but I don't believe I need to be able to count the paper fibers from 200 yards away, not yet, at least.

What would you go with for a starting scope, 200 yard range max?

Keep in mind, I'm totally new to Long Range Target Shooting, if you know of any info that would help, it'd be much appreciated. So far I've poked around on Snipercentral.com and have read a few reviews and whatnot.

Sorry I don't have any specific recommendations for you just a philosophy. Don't cheap out! Max your budget on glass. A good scope will outlive several rifles. Look at it this way, if you buy a cheap/mid range scope you will just have to buy another 1 down the road. If you buy a killer scope you won't have to buy 1 ever again. Common saying is buy once cry once or buy cheap buy twice. Have you ever looked through a 1k+ scope? Once I did I was ruined on anything else

Its going on a 22lr. trainer Im building. Clear glass from just looking through it, and its a front focal plane scope at that price. But I do love my SS 10x on my .308

This scope allows to be fast at 4x and very accurate at 14x not to mention its FFP

In your budget, Nikon buckmaster 4.5-14 side focus mil dot is the best scope for the money.

Right around $300. Quality glass with reliable adjustments.

There are far better scopes out there, but they are out of your stated budget.

The nikon will serve very well out to about 4-500 yds. I've shot 600 with mine, but want more power when going farther than 4-500.

No I am talking about this one. It has Mil knobs to match the Mil Reticle. That is important part of it. Less math is good!

If 200 yards is far as you're planning to shoot, any durable scope will do.

Simple duplex will do, and covered turrets will do fine.

With 308 it's not until past 200 yards that any bells and whistles would be used.

Nikon has their BDC (Bullet Drop Compensation) reticle available on some of their scopes. You zero at 100 yds., then use the small compensation circles in the reticle at 200 yds., 300 yds, etc....

It's available in their Prostaff, Buckmaster, and Monarch lines..from $150-400.

Nikon also has .223 -specific (such as AR and your Rem 700) scopes in the P-223 and M-223 lines, where the compensation is already calibrated for .223. After a lot of research, I just bought the Nikon P-223 3-9x40 scope for target shooting at 100-200 yds...like you, maybe 300 max just for fun. Mind you, my budget was $150-240 as I just want a range toy and already have a red dot for closer work.

Try the FFP scope at primary arms or maybe a Nikon Buckmaster. Or even the M and P series Nikons those are pretty nice.
