Optic for Deer Hunting

I have a Remington 700 .270 and a Leupold Vari-X iie 3x9x40.. Should I mount this on my rifle for deer hunting? Will the POI change if I change the power setting?

I applied for my deer tag and just want to get my setup ready if I get lucky in the lottery.

New scope or go with what I have? What would you recommend?

I applied for D12 which should be wide open.

that is a great scope for that rifle and deer hunting. POI will not change unless your mount or rings are loose.

I hunt and have killed deer just in case somebody who doesn't answers the thread differently.

That scope and rifle combination will work perfectly for deer hunting and I have a lot of confidence in Leupold scopes as I use them on my dangerous game rifles.

Brownell's gunsmithing recommends:

Leupold:

base screws 14 in/lbs,
ring screws, 15-17 in/lbs,
45 in/lbs on the windage screw,
65 in/lbs on the cross bolt for the Mk IV ring.

That is what I use on over a dozen rifles and never had a problem. Great scope for hunting. I had them on our rifles and never had a problem with any shot including 450+ yards in Africa and 600 yard shot on pronghorns here. I do like the 3.5X10X40 very much but only have one. It is on a very accurate 25-06 and has taken some long shots also.
Most of you shots at deer will be under 100 yards if you do your part.

One more thing, should I go with low or medium height rings for a 40mm objective?

Use low rings and a 40mm OB Leupold scope. Either Leupold or Talley will work just fine. "I" prefer a one piece mount myself.
You want to mount the scope as low to the bore as possible. I have several rifles that you can just barely slide a business card between the scope and the barrel. They shoot well or better and keep their zero over the years.

The lightweight one piece alloy mounts are excellent for a lightweight mountain rifle setup, the fixed steel base and rings are a little heavier duty and have a classic look to them.
