Reccomend some binoculars to me.

I'm looking for a set to use when hiking/camping so lighter/compact is better. They will be used for scanning terrain and identifying landmarks in desert/mountains/forests. I'm thinkin X8 or maybe X10 magnification. Most important is that they be rugged and waterproof so they can survive a few spills in different situations and keep on working. I'm willing to compromise a little bit of clarity and light gathering for ruggedness and dependability. My budget is around $200 or less. Any suggestions?

Nikon Buckmasters. 8x is a really good magnification for walking and spotting. But the 10x can be sorta helpful for longer distances (perhaps desert). Not much of a difference between the two.

I've used a Steiner Military 8x32 for years. They run about 200.00 or less if you shop a bit ...220 in Cabela's. I love the no focus system. Weight is good also.

If you want to read tireless recommendations on binoculars, check out the birding forums. I've learned more about binos from those places than anywhere- and they take it very seriously. They helped me make my decision. Then I found a vendor... Scott at Liberty Optics just helped me part with more $. God bless him.
